[आ] कतरस तव एतयॊः पूर्वं देवानाम एति सात्म्यताम उभयॊर धावतॊ राजन सूर्या चन्द्रमसॊर इव ।। १-८७-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka inquired, "O King, among these two, who continuously strive like the Sun and the Moon, who first achieves union with the divine essence, Brahma - the ascetic or the sage of wisdom?"' ।। 1-87-1 ।।

english translation

[A] katarasa tava etayòH pUrvaM devAnAma eti sAtmyatAma ubhayòra dhAvatò rAjana sUryA candramasòra iva || 1-87-1 ||

hk transliteration

[य] अनिकेतॊ गृहस्थेषु कामवृत्तेषु संयतः गराम एव वसन भिक्षुस तयॊः पूर्वतरं गतः ।। १-८७-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati answered, 'The wise, with the help of the Vedas and Knowledge, having ascertained the visible universe to be illusory, instantly realize the Supreme Spirit as the sole existent independent essence. While they devote themselves to Yoga meditation takes time to acquire the same knowledge, for it is by practice alone that these latter divest themselves of the consciousness of quality. Hence the wise attain to salvation first.'' ।। 1-87-2 ।।

english translation

[ya] aniketò gRhastheSu kAmavRtteSu saMyataH garAma eva vasana bhikSusa tayòH pUrvataraM gataH || 1-87-2 ||

hk transliteration

अप्राप्य दीर्घम आयुस तु यः पराप्तॊ विकृतिं चरेत तप्येत यदि तत कृत्वा चरेत सॊ ऽनयत ततस तपः ।। १-८७-३ ।।

sanskrit

'If a yogi, swayed by worldly distractions, does not achieve success within one lifetime, the progress made benefits him in his next life. Aware of his past deviations, he dedicates himself more earnestly to achieving his spiritual goals.' ।। 1-87-3 ।।

english translation

aprApya dIrghama Ayusa tu yaH parAptò vikRtiM careta tapyeta yadi tata kRtvA careta sò 'nayata tatasa tapaH || 1-87-3 ||

hk transliteration

यद वै नृशंसं तद अपथ्यम आहुर; यः सेवते धर्मम अनर्थबुद्धिः अस्वॊ ऽपय अनीशश च तथैव राजंस; तदार्जवं स समाधिस तदार्यम ।। १-८७-४ ।।

sanskrit

'What is considered cruel, they say, is improper. He who serves righteousness with misguided intelligence, without self-control, and control over his senses, is indeed unjust. His equanimity is lost; his composure is shattered.' ।। 1-87-4 ।।

english translation

yada vai nRzaMsaM tada apathyama Ahura; yaH sevate dharmama anarthabuddhiH asvò 'paya anIzaza ca tathaiva rAjaMsa; tadArjavaM sa samAdhisa tadAryama || 1-87-4 ||

hk transliteration

[आ] केनासि दूतः परहितॊ ऽदय राजन; युवा सरग्वी दर्शनीयः सुवर्चाः कुत आगतः कतरस्यां दिशि तवम; उताहॊ सवित पार्थिवं सथानम अस्ति ।। १-८७-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka spoke, 'O king, you appear youthful, adorned with celestial ornaments, and radiate great splendor. From where do you come and where do you go? Whose messenger are you? Are you descending into the earth?'' ।। 1-87-5 ।।

english translation

[A] kenAsi dUtaH parahitò 'daya rAjana; yuvA saragvI darzanIyaH suvarcAH kuta AgataH katarasyAM dizi tavama; utAhò savita pArthivaM sathAnama asti || 1-87-5 ||
