[भस] पुनर भरत वंशस्य हेतुं संतानवृद्धये वक्ष्यामि नियतं मातस तन मे निगदतः शृणु ॥ १-९९-१ ॥

'Bhishma said, "Furthermore, to ensure the growth of the Bharata dynasty, I shall expound definitively, O Mother, listen closely to my words."' ॥ 1-99-1 ॥

बराह्मणॊ गुणवान कश चिद धनेनॊपनिमन्त्र्यताम विचित्रवीर्यक्षेत्रेषु यः समुत्पादयेत परजाः ॥ १-९९-२ ॥

'Let an accomplished Brahmana be invited by an offer of wealth, and let him raise offspring upon the wives of Vichitravirya.' ॥ 1-99-2 ॥

[व] ततः सत्यवती भीष्मं वाचा संसज्जमानया विहसन्तीव सव्रीडम इदं वचनम अब्रवीत ॥ १-९९-३ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, 'Satyavati, then, smiling softly and in voice broken in bashfulness, addressed Bhishma saying.' ॥ 1-99-3 ॥

सत्यम एतन महाबाहॊ यथा वदसि भारत विश्वासात ते परवक्ष्यामि संतानाय कुलस्य च न ते शक्यम अनाख्यातुम आपद धीयं तथाविधा ॥ १-९९-४ ॥

'O Bharata of mighty arms, your words ring true. With confidence in you, I shall now reveal the means to ensure the continuation of our lineage. You shall not find it possible to disregard, given your familiarity with the practices allowed during times of distress.' ॥ 1-99-4 ॥

तवम एव नः कुले धर्मस तवं सत्यं तवं परा गतिः तस्मान निशम्य वाक्यं मे कुरुष्व यद अनन्तरम ॥ १-९९-५ ॥

'In our lineage, you embody virtue, truth, and our ultimate refuge. Therefore, after truly considering my words, do what is deemed appropriate.' ॥ 1-99-5 ॥
