[वै] यदा निवृत्ता राजानॊ धनुषः सज्य कर्मणि अथॊदतिष्ठद विप्राणां मध्याज जिष्णुर उदारधीः ॥ १-१७९-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, 'When all the monarchs had given up trying to string that bow, the noble-hearted Arjuna stood up from among the gathering of Brahmanas seated in that assembly.' ॥ 1-179-1 ॥

उदक्रॊशन विप्रमुख्या विधुन्वन्तॊ ऽजिनानि च दृष्ट्वा संप्रस्थितं पार्थम इन्द्रकेतुसमप्रभम ॥ १-१७९-२ ॥

'And seeing Partha, whose complexion resembled Indra's banner, approaching the bow, the chief Brahmins shook their deer-skins and raised a loud clamor.' ॥ 1-179-2 ॥

के चिद आसन विमनसः के चिद आसन मुदा युताः आहुः परस्परं के चिन निपुणा बुद्धिजीविनः ॥ १-१७९-३ ॥

'And while some were displeased, others were well-pleased. Among them were those endowed with intelligence and foresight, who addressed each other .' ॥ 1-179-3 ॥

यत कर्ण शल्य परमुखैः पार्थिवैर लॊकविश्रुतैः नानृतं बलवद्भिर हि धनुर्वेदा परायणैः ॥ १-१७९-४ ॥

'The chief of the Brahmanas said, "O Brahmanas, how can a young Brahmana, inexperienced in warfare and lacking in strength, string that bow which renowned Kshatriyas like Salya and others, skilled and proficient in the science and practice of arms, could not?' ॥ 1-179-4 ॥

तत कथं तव अकृतास्त्रेण पराणतॊ दुर्बलीयसा बटु मात्रेण शक्यं हि सज्यं कर्तुं धनुर दविजाः ॥ १-१७९-५ ॥

'How is it that you, being without any weapons, were overpowered by the weaker ones? O Brahmin, is it possible to ready the bow merely with a stick?' ॥ 1-179-5 ॥
