[वै] ततः समुद्रे तीर्थानि दक्षिणे भरतर्षभः अभ्यगच्छत सुपुण्यानि शॊभितानि तपस्विभिः ॥ १-२०८-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, "Then that mighty descendant of Bharata went to the sacred waters along the banks of the southern ocean, all adorned by ascetics."' ॥ 1-208-1 ॥

वर्जयन्ति सम तीर्थानि पञ्च तत्र तु तापसाः आचीर्णानि तु यान्य आसन पुरस्तात तु तपस्विभिः ॥ १-२०८-२ ॥

'And there lay scattered five such regions where also dwelt many ascetics.' ॥ 1-208-2 ॥

अगस्त्यतीर्थं सौभद्रं पौलॊमं च सुपावनम कारंधमं परसन्नं च हयमेध फलं च यत भारद्वाजस्य तीर्थं च पापप्रशमनं महत ॥ १-२०८-३ ॥

'However, all of them avoided those five waters. These sacred waters were known as Agastya Tirtha, Saubhadra Tirtha, Pauloma Tirtha of great sanctity, Karandhama Tirtha of immense auspiciousness, yielding the benefits of a horse-sacrifice to those who bathed there, and Bharadwaja Tirtha, the great purifier of sins.' ॥ 1-208-3 ॥

विविक्तान्य उपलक्ष्याथ तानि तीर्थानि पाण्डवः दृष्ट्वा च वर्ज्यमानानि मुनिभिर धर्मबुद्धिभिः ॥ १-२०८-४ ॥

'The foremost among the Kurus, upon beholding those five sacred waters and noticing their desolation, and upon learning that they were avoided by the virtuous ascetics residing nearby.' ॥ 1-208-4 ॥

तपस्विनस ततॊ ऽपृच्छत पराज्ञलिः कुरुनन्दनः तीर्थानीमानि वर्ज्यन्ते किमर्थं बरह्मवादिभिः ॥ १-२०८-५ ॥

'Approached those pious men with folded hands and asked, "O ascetics, why are these five sacred waters avoided by those who know Brahma?' ॥ 1-208-5 ॥
