[वै] ततः परज्वलिते शुक्रे शार्ङ्गकास ते सुदुःखिताः वयथिताः परमॊद्विग्ना नाधिजग्मुः परायणम ॥ १-२२१-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, "As the fire blazed in the forest of Khandava, the young birds became greatly distressed and afflicted. Filled with anxiety, they saw no means of escape."' ॥ 1-221-1 ॥

निशाम्य पुत्रकान बालान माता तेषां तपस्विनी जरिता दुःखसंतप्ता विललाप नरेश्वर ॥ १-२२१-२ ॥

'Their mother, the helpless Jarita, knowing that they were too young to escape, was filled with sorrow and wept aloud.' ॥ 1-221-2 ॥

अयम अग्निर दहन कक्षम इत आयाति भीषणः जगत संदीपयन भीमॊ मम दुःखविवर्धनः ॥ १-२२१-३ ॥

'And she said, "Oh, the dreadful inferno, illuminating the entire universe and engulfing the forest, draws near to us, intensifying my sorrow."' ॥ 1-221-3 ॥

इमे च मां कर्षयन्ति शिशवॊ मन्दचेतसः अबर्हाश चरणैर हीनाः पूर्वेषां नः परायणम तरासयंश चायम आयाति लेलिहानॊ महीरुहान ॥ १-२२१-४ ॥

'"These infants, lacking feathers and feet, and the sole refuge of our deceased ancestors, trouble me deeply with their immature understanding. Oh, this fire approaches, spreading fear all around, licking the tallest trees with its tongue, lamented Jarita."' ॥ 1-221-4 ॥

अशक्तिमत्त्वाच च सुता न शक्ताः सरणे मम आदाय च न शक्तास्मि पुत्रान सरितुम अन्यतः ॥ १-२२१-५ ॥

'"Due to their helplessness, my sons are unable to take refuge anywhere. I am also unable to take them away to safety," lamented Jarita.' ॥ 1-221-5 ॥
