[षौनक] पुराणम अखिलं तात पिता ते ऽधीतवान पुरा कच चित तवम अपि तत सर्वम अधीषे लॊमहर्षणे ॥ १-५-१ ॥

'Saunaka inquired, "Young one, your father had once thoroughly studied the entire Puranas, O descendant of Lomaharshana"' ॥ 1-5-1 ॥

पुराणे हि कथा दिव्या आदिवंशाश च धीमताम कथ्यन्ते ताः पुरास्माभिः शरुताः पूर्वं पितुस तव ॥ १-५-२ ॥

'Have you also delved into the study of those Puranas? In those ancient scriptures, captivating stories and the histories of the earliest generations of wise individuals are documented—all of which we heard recounted by your father.' ॥ 1-5-2 ॥

तत्र वंशम अहं पूर्वं शरॊतुम इच्छामि भार्गवम कथयस्व कथाम एतां कल्याः सम शरवणे तव ॥ १-५-३ ॥

'First and foremost, I am eager to hear about the lineage of Bhrigu. Please narrate that history, and we will listen attentively to your words.' ॥ 1-5-3 ॥

[स] यद अधीतं पुरा सम्यग दविजश्रेष्ठ महात्मभिः वैशम्पायन विप्राद्यैस तैश चापि कथितं पुरा ॥ १-५-४ ॥

'Sauti replied, 'I have indeed mastered all that was previously studied by the noble Brahmanas, including Vaisampayana, and passed down by them. I have also acquired the knowledge that my father had once studied."' ॥ 1-5-4 ॥

यद अधीतं च पित्रा मे सम्यक चैव ततॊ मया तत तावच छृणु यॊ देवैः सेन्द्रैः साग्निमरुद गणैः पूजितः परवरॊ वंशॊ भृगूणां भृगुनन्दन ॥ १-५-५ ॥

'O scion of the Bhrigu lineage, now listen to the illustrious tale of the exalted race of Bhrigu, held in reverence by Indra and all the gods, as well as by the communities of Rishis and the Maruts (Winds).' ॥ 1-5-5 ॥
