किमर्थं राजशार्दूल स राजा जनमेजयः सर्पसत्रेण सर्पाणां गतॊ ऽनतं तद वदस्व मे ॥ १-१३-१ ॥

'Saunaka said, 'For what reason did that tiger among kings, the royal Janamejaya, determine to take the lives of the snakes by means of a sacrifice? O Sauti, tell us in full the true story.'॥ 1-13-1 ॥

आस्तीकश च दविजश्रेष्ठः किमर्थं जपतां वरः मॊक्षयाम आस भुजगान दीप्तात तस्माद धुताशनात ॥ १-१३-२ ॥

'Tell us also why Astika, that best of regenerate ones, that foremost of ascetics, rescued the snakes from the blazing fire.'॥ 1-13-2 ॥

कस्य पुत्रः स राजासीत सर्पसत्रं य आहरत स च दविजातिप्रवरः कस्य पुत्रॊ वदस्व मे ॥ १-१३-३ ॥

'Whose son was that monarch who celebrated the snake sacrifice? And whose son also was that best of regenerate ones?'॥ 1-13-3 ॥

[स] महद आख्यानम आस्तीकं यत्रैतत परॊच्यते दविज सर्वम एतद अशेषेण शृणु मे वदतां वर ॥ १-१३-४ ॥

'Sauti said, 'O best of speakers, this story of Astika is long. I will duly relate it in full, O listen!'॥ 1-13-4 ॥

[ष] शरॊतुम इच्छाम्य अशेषेण कथाम एतां मनॊरमाम आस्तीकस्य पुराणस्य बराह्मणस्य यशस्विनः ॥ १-१३-५ ॥

'Saunaka said, 'I am desirous of hearing at length the charming story of that Rishi, that illustrious Brahmana named Astika.'॥ 1-13-5 ॥
