[ज] तवत्तः शरुतम इदं बरह्मन देवदानवरक्षसाम अंशावतरणं सम्यग गन्धर्वाप्सरसां तथा ॥ १-६२-१ ॥

'Janamejaya said, 'O Brahmana, I have, indeed, heard from thee this account of the incarnation, according to their portions, of the gods, the Danavas, the Rakshasas, and also of the Gandharvas and the Apsaras.' ॥ 1-62-1 ॥

इमं तु भूय इच्छामि कुरूणां वंशम आदितः कथ्यमानं तवया विप्र विप्रर्षिगणसंनिधौ ॥ १-६२-२ ॥

'I however, again desire to hear of the dynasty of the Kurus from the very beginning. Therefore, O Brahmana, speak of this in the presence of all these regenerate Rishis (Sages).' ॥ 1-62-2 ॥

[व] पौरवाणां वंशकरॊ दुःषन्तॊ नाम वीर्यवान पृथिव्याश चतुरन्ताया गॊप्ता भरतसत्तम ॥ १-६२-३ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, 'O exalted one of Bharata's race, the founder of the Paurava line was Dushmanta gifted with great energy. And he was the protector of the earth bounded by the four seas.' ॥ 1-62-3 ॥

चतुर्भागं भुवः कृत्स्नं स भुङ्क्ते मनुजेश्वरः समुद्रावरणांश चापि देशान स समितिंजयः ॥ १-६२-४ ॥

'And that king had full sway over four quarters of this world. And he was the lord also of various regions in the midst of the sea.' ॥ 1-62-4 ॥

आम्लेच्छाटविकान सर्वान स भुङ्क्ते रिपुमर्दनः रत्नाकर समुद्रान्तांश चातुर्वर्ण्यजनावृतान ॥ १-६२-५ ॥

'The vanquisher of enemies, consuming all, defeats the fourfold divisions of society, as well as the regions up to the jewel-producing ocean, inhabited by people of various classes.' ॥ 1-62-5 ॥
