[वै] तस्याभिवर्षतॊ वारि पाण्डवः परत्यवारयत शरवर्षेण बीभत्सुर उत्तमास्त्राणि दर्शयन ॥ १-२१८-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, 'Then Arjuna, the son of Pandu, invoking his excellent weapons, countered Indra's shower of rain with a shower of his own weapons.'' ॥ 1-218-1 ॥

शरैः समन्ततः सर्वं खाण्डवं चापि पाण्डवः छादयाम आस तद वर्षम अपकृष्य ततॊ वनात ॥ १-२१८-२ ॥

'And Arjuna of immeasurable soul soon covered the forest of Khandava with innumerable arrows like the moon covering the atmosphere with a thick fog.' ॥ 1-218-2 ॥

न च सम किं चिच छक्नॊति भूतं निश्चरितं ततः संछाद्यमाने खगमैर अस्यता सव्यसाचिना ॥ १-२१८-३ ॥

'When the sky above that forest was thus covered with the arrows of Arjuna no living creature could then escape from below.' ॥ 1-218-3 ॥

तक्षकस तु न तत्रासीत सर्पराजॊ महाबलः दह्यमाने वने तस्मिन कुरुक्षेत्रे ऽभवत तदा ॥ १-२१८-४ ॥

'And during the burning of that forest, Takshaka, the chief of the Nagas, was absent, having gone to the battlefield of Kurukshetra at that time.' ॥ 1-218-4 ॥

अश्वसेनस तु तत्रासीत तक्षकस्य सुतॊ बली स यत्नम अकरॊत तीव्रं मॊक्षार्थं हव्यवाहनात ॥ १-२१८-५ ॥

'But Ashvasena, the powerful son of Takshaka, was present. Despite his great efforts to escape the fire, he was unable to find a way out, hindered by Arjuna's arrows.' ॥ 1-218-5 ॥
