[ज] देवानां दानवानां च यक्षाणाम अथ रक्षसाम अन्येषां चैव भूतानां सर्वेषां भगवन्न अहम ॥ १-६१-१ ॥

'Janamejaya spoke, 'O revered one, I am eager to learn in detail from you about the incarnation among humans of the gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, Rakshasas, as well as of lions, tigers, and various animals, snakes, birds, and indeed, the origin of all creatures.'' ॥ 1-61-1 ॥

शरॊतुम इच्छामि तत्त्वेन मानुषेषु महात्मनाम जन्म कर्म च भूतानाम एतेषाम अनुपूर्वशः ॥ १-६१-२ ॥

'I also wish to hear about the deeds and accomplishments of those divine beings, in chronological order, after they took on human incarnations.' ॥ 1-61-2 ॥

[व] मानुषेषु मनुष्येन्द्र संभूता ये दिवौकसः परथमं दानवांश चैव तांस ते वक्ष्यामि सर्वशः ॥ १-६१-३ ॥

'Vaisampayana spoke, "O sovereign of humans, I shall commence by recounting to you all about those divine beings and Danavas who took birth in human form."' ॥ 1-61-3 ॥

विप्रचित्तिर इति खयातॊ य आसीद दानवर्षभः जरासंध इति खयातः स आसीन मनुजर्षभः ॥ १-६१-४ ॥

'The first of Danavas, who was known by the name of Viprachitti, became that bull among men, noted as Jarasandha.' ॥ 1-61-4 ॥

दितेः पुत्रस तु यॊ राजन हिरण्यकशिपुः समृतः स जज्ञे मानुषे लॊके शिशुपालॊ नरर्षभः ॥ १-६१-५ ॥

'And, O king, the offspring of Diti, renowned as Hiranyakashipu, manifested in the human realm as the formidable Sisupala.' ॥ 1-61-5 ॥
