[स] इदम अत्यद्भुतं चान्यद आस्तीकस्यानुशुश्रुमः तथा वरैश छन्द्यमाने राज्ञा पारिक्षितेन ह ॥ १-५३-१ ॥

'Sauti narrated, 'Now, hear another remarkable incident related to Astika. As King Janamejaya prepared to fulfill Astika's desire by granting him a boon.' ॥ 1-53-1 ॥

english translation

इन्द्रहस्ताच चयुतॊ नागः ख एव यद अतिष्ठत ततश चिन्तापरॊ राजा बभूव जनमेजयः ॥ १-५३-२ ॥

'The snake, Takshaka, cast off from Indra's grasp, hovered in mid-air without descending. This intrigued King Janamejaya.' ॥ 1-53-2 ॥

english translation

हूयमाने भृशं दीप्ते विधिवत पावके तदा न सम स परापतद वह्नौ तक्षकॊ भयपीडितः ॥ १-५३-३ ॥

'Despite the pouring of libations in due form into the blazing sacrificial fire in the name of Takshaka, who was distressed with fear, he did not immediately descend into the flames.' ॥ 1-53-3 ॥

english translation

[षौ] किं सूत तेषां विप्राणां मन्त्रग्रामॊ मनीषिणाम न परत्यभात तदाग्नौ यन न पपात स तक्षकः ॥ १-५३-४ ॥

'Saunaka inquired, 'Suta, could it be that the mantras recited by those learned Brahmanas lacked efficacy, given that Takshaka did not descend into the fire?' ॥ 1-53-4 ॥

english translation

[स] तम इन्द्रहस्ताद विस्रस्तं विसंज्ञं पन्नगॊत्तमम आस्तीकस तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति वाचस तिस्रॊ ऽभयुदैरयत ॥ १-५३-५ ॥

'Sauti responded, 'After Takshaka, the eminent serpent, was ejected from Indra's grasp, Astika had uttered the words 'Stay,' 'Stay,' 'Stay' three times to the unconscious serpent.'' ॥ 1-53-5 ॥
