[वै] गुरवे पराङ नमस्कृत्य मनॊ बुद्धिसमाधिभिः संपूज्य च दविजान सर्वांस तथान्यान विदुषॊ जनान ॥ १-५५-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana recounted, "Initiating the obeisance, I first lowered my body with all eight parts touching the ground in deep devotion and respect to my preceptor. With profound sincerity, I paid homage to the entire assembly of Brahmanas and other learned individuals."' ॥ 1-55-1 ॥

english translation

महर्षेः सर्वलॊकेषु विश्रुतस्यास्य धीमतः परवक्ष्यामि मतं कृत्स्नं वयासस्यामित तेजसः ॥ १-५५-२ ॥

'I shall recite in full what I have heard from the high-souled and great Rishi Vyasa, the first of intelligent men in the three worlds.' ॥ 1-55-2 ॥

english translation

शरॊतुं पात्रं च राजंस तवं पराप्येमां भारतीं कथाम गुरॊर वक्तुं परिस्पन्दॊ मुदा परॊत्साहतीव माम ॥ १-५५-३ ॥

'As it is now accessible to you, O monarch, you are indeed a suitable audience for the narrative known as Bharata. Inspired by my teacher's guidance, my heart is devoid of fear.' ॥ 1-55-3 ॥

english translation

शृणु राजन यथा भेदः कुरुपाण्डवयॊर अभूत राज्यार्थे दयूतसंभूतॊ वनवासस तथैव च ॥ १-५५-४ ॥

'Hear, O monarch, the reasons behind the discord between the Kurus and the Pandavas, as well as the subsequent exile to the woods,prompted by the Kuru's desire for power through the game of dice.' ॥ 1-55-4 ॥

english translation

यथा च युद्धम अभवत पृथिवी कषयकारकम तत ते ऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि पृच्छते भरतर्षभ ॥ १-५५-५ ॥

'I shall narrate everything to you, the noblest among the Bharata lineage, as you inquire.' ॥ 1-55-5 ॥
