तस्य तद वचनं शरुत्वा कृष्णद्वैपायनस तदा शशास शिष्यम आसीनं वैशम्पायनम अन्तिके ॥ १-५४-२१ ॥

'Hearing those words of Janamejaya, Krishna-Dwaipayana directed his disciple Vaisampayana seated by his side.' ॥ 1-54-21 ॥

tasya tada vacanaM zarutvA kRSNadvaipAyanasa tadA zazAsa ziSyama AsInaM vaizampAyanama antike ॥ 1-54-21 ॥

कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च यथा भेदॊ ऽभवत पुरा तद अस्मै सर्वम आचक्ष्व यन मत्तः शरुतवान असि ॥ १-५४-२२ ॥

'Instructing him, Vyasa said, "Recount to the king the ancient discord that unfolded between the Kurus and the Pandavas, exactly as you have heard it from me."' ॥ 1-54-22 ॥

kurUNAM pANDavAnAM ca yathA bhedò 'bhavata purA tada asmai sarvama AcakSva yana mattaH zarutavAna asi ॥ 1-54-22 ॥

गुरॊर वचनम आज्ञाय स तु विप्रर्षभस तदा आचचक्षे ततः सर्वम इतिहासं पुरातनम ॥ १-५४-२३ ॥

'Following the command of his revered guru, the eminent sage then began narrating the entire ancient history in detail.' ॥ 1-54-23 ॥

'He narrated the tale to the king, the assembled Sadasyas, and all the chieftains present, elucidating the enmity and ultimate downfall of both the Kuru and Pandava clans.' ॥ 1-54-24 ॥
