[वस] पृच्छामि तवां वसु मना रौशदश्विर; यद्य अस्ति लॊकॊ दिवि मह्यं नरेन्द्र यद्य अन्तरिक्षे परथितॊ महात्मन; कषेत्रज्ञं तवां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥ १-८८-१ ॥

'Vasumat said, "I am Vasumat, the son of Oshadaswa. O king, I inquire whether there are any realms in heaven or in the firmament for me to enjoy as the result of my religious merits. You, O high-souled one, are well-versed in all sacred domains."' ॥ 1-88-1 ॥

[य] यद अन्तरिक्षं पृथिवी दिशश च; यत तेजसा तपते भानुमांश च लॊकास तावन्तॊ दिवि संस्थिता वै; ते नान्तवन्तः परतिपालयन्ति ॥ १-८८-२ ॥

'Yayati answered, 'There are as many regions for thee to enjoy in heaven as the number of places in the firmament, the Earth and the ten points of the universe illumined by the Sun.'' ॥ 1-88-2 ॥

[वस] तांस ते ददामि पत मा परपातं; ये मे लॊकास तव ते वै भवन्तु करीणीष्वैनांस तृणकेनापि राजन; परतिग्रहस ते यदि सम्यक परदुष्टः ॥ १-८८-३ ॥

'Vasumat stated, "I bestow them upon you. Let the realms destined for me be yours instead. Thus, even as you descend, you shall remain aloft. Should accepting them as gifts seem unsuitable, O king, consider acquiring them in exchange for a mere straw."' ॥ 1-88-3 ॥

[य] न मिथ्याहं विक्रयं वै समरामि; वृथा गृहीतं शिशुकाच छङ्कमानः कुर्यां न चैवाकृत पूर्वम अन्यैर; विवित्समानः किम उ तत्र साधु ॥ १-८८-४ ॥

'Yayati responded, "I do not engage in transactions based on falsehood, nor do I accept things in vain, like a child grasping at shadows. I shall not do what others have not done before, seeking what is virtuous. How could there be any good in such actions?"' ॥ 1-88-4 ॥

[वस] तांस तवं लॊकान परतिपद्यस्व राजन; मया दत्तान यदि नेष्टः करयस ते अहं न तान वै परतिगन्ता नरेन्द्र; सर्वे लॊकास तव ते वै भवन्तु ॥ १-८८-५ ॥

'Vasumat declared, "O king, should you find the act of purchasing them unsuitable, accept them instead as a gift from me. Personally, I assure you I shall not seek to enter those realms designated for me. Hence, they are yours to claim."' ॥ 1-88-5 ॥
