[य] न तुल्यतेजाः सुकृतं कामयेत; यॊगक्षेमं पार्थिव पार्थिवः सन दैवादेशाद आपदं पराप्य विद्वांश; चरेन नृशंसं न हि जातु राजा ॥ १-८७-१६ ॥

'Yayati said, 'A king, despite being a ruler, should not desire the well-being obtained through unrighteous means, nor should he covet the prosperity of another. Even if faced with adversity by divine ordinance, a wise king should never engage in cruel actions, for no true monarch ever would.'' ॥ 1-87-16 ॥

english translation

[ya] na tulyatejAH sukRtaM kAmayeta; yògakSemaM pArthiva pArthivaH sana daivAdezAda ApadaM parApya vidvAMza; carena nRzaMsaM na hi jAtu rAjA ॥ 1-87-16 ॥

धर्म्यं मार्गं चेतयानॊ यशस्यं; कुर्यान नृपॊ धर्मम अवेक्षमाणः न मद्विधॊ धर्मबुद्धिः परजानन; कुर्याद एवं कृपणं मां यथात्थ ॥ १-८७-१७ ॥

'A king, ever vigilant in the pursuit of virtue, should steadfastly follow the path of righteousness, just as I have endeavored to do. Understanding his obligations, he should never degrade himself by acting in the manner you suggest.' ॥ 1-87-17 ॥

english translation

dharmyaM mArgaM cetayAnò yazasyaM; kuryAna nRpò dharmama avekSamANaH na madvidhò dharmabuddhiH parajAnana; kuryAda evaM kRpaNaM mAM yathAttha ॥ 1-87-17 ॥

कुर्याम अपूर्वं न कृतं यद अन्यैर; विवित्समानः किम उ तत्र साधु बरुवाणम एवं नृपतिं ययातिं; नृपॊत्तमॊ वसु मनाब्रवीत तम ॥ १-८७-१८ ॥

'When others desirous of acquiring religious merits do not accept gifts, how can I do what they do not? After this speech, the best of kings, Yayati, was then addressed by Vasumat in the following words.' ॥ 1-87-18 ॥
