[ईन्द्र] सर्वाणि कर्माणि समाप्य राजन; गृहान परित्यज्य वनं गतॊ ऽसि तत तवां पृच्छामि नहुषस्य पुत्र; केनासि तुल्यस तपसा ययाते ॥ १-८३-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana narrated, "Following this, Indra posed another question to Yayati, saying, 'O king, you withdrew to the forest having fulfilled all your responsibilities. O Yayati, descendant of Nahusha, I am curious to know, with whom do you compare in terms of your ascetic rigor?"' ॥ 1-83-1 ॥

[य] नाहं देवमनुष्येषु न गन्धर्वमहर्षिषु आत्मनस तपसा तुल्यं कं चित पश्यामि वासव ॥ १-८३-२ ॥

'Yayati replied, "O Vasava, I do not see anyone equal to me in terms of ascetic austerities among humans, celestial beings, Gandharvas, and even the great sages."' ॥ 1-83-2 ॥

[ई] यदावमंस्थाः सदृशः शरेयसश च; पापीयसश चाविदित परभावः तस्माल लॊका अन्तवन्तस तवेमे; कषीणे पुण्ये पतितास्य अद्य राजन ॥ १-८३-३ ॥

'Indra expressed, "O king, by undervaluing your superiors, equals, and even those below you, without truly recognizing their worth, your virtues have diminished, leading to your inevitable descent from heaven."' ॥ 1-83-3 ॥

[य] सुरर्षिगन्धर्वनरावमानात; कषयं गता मे यदि शक्र लॊकाः इच्छेयं वै सुरलॊकाद विहीनः; सतां मध्ये पतितुं देवराज ॥ १-८३-४ ॥

'Yayati expressed, "O Indra, if indeed my virtues have diminished, necessitating my descent from heaven, then I wish, O sovereign of the celestials, to find my place among the virtuous and the truthful on Earth."' ॥ 1-83-4 ॥

[ई] सतां सकाशे पतितासि राजंश; चयुतः परतिष्ठां यत्र लब्धासि भूयः एवं विदित्वा तु पुनर ययाते; न ते ऽवमान्याः सदृशः शरेयसश च ॥ १-८३-५ ॥

'Indra responded, "O king, you will descend among the virtuous and the wise, gaining considerable renown in the process. Henceforth, Yayati, ensure you do not overlook the merit in those superior to you or even those equal to you."' ॥ 1-83-5 ॥
