[वै] तत्र तेषु शयानेषु हिडिम्बॊ नाम राक्षसः अविदूरे वनात तस्माच छाल वृक्षम उपाश्रितः ॥ १-१३९-१ ॥

'While they were sleeping there, a demon named Hidimba, Not far from that forest, had resorted to a Sal tree.' ॥ 1-139-1 ॥

करूरॊ मानुषमांसादॊ महावीर्यॊ महाबलः विरूपरूपः पिङ्गाक्षः करालॊ घॊरदर्शनः पिशितेप्सुः कषुधार्तस तान अपश्यत यदृच्छया ॥ १-१३९-२ ॥

'Cruel, a devourer of human flesh, of great vigor and great strength, Having a deformed shape, with tawny eyes, formidable, and of terrible appearance, Desirous of flesh, tormented by hunger, he saw them by chance.' ॥ 1-139-2 ॥

ऊर्ध्वाङ्गुलिः स कण्डूयन धुन्वन रूक्षाञ शिरॊरुहान जृम्भमाणॊ महावक्रः पुनः पुनर अवेक्ष्य च ॥ १-१३९-३ ॥

'With his fingers pointed upwards, scratching and shaking his rough hair, Yawning, with a large curved mouth, repeatedly looking around.' ॥ 1-139-3 ॥

दुष्टॊ मानुषमांसादॊ महाकायॊ महाबलः आघ्राय मानुषं गन्धं भगिनीम इदम अब्रवीत ॥ १-१३९-४ ॥

'The wicked man-eating [demon], with a huge body and great strength, Smelling the scent of humans, said this to his sister.' ॥ 1-139-4 ॥

उपपन्नश चिरस्याद्य भक्षॊ मम मनःप्रियः सनेहस्रवान परस्रवति जिह्वा पर्येति मे मुखम ॥ १-१३९-५ ॥

'Sister, it has been a long while since such delectable food has come my way! Just the thought makes my mouth water.' ॥ 1-139-5 ॥
