[वै] तौ रथाभ्यां नरव्याघ्रौ दावस्यॊभयतः सथितौ दिक्षु सर्वासु भूतानां चक्राते कदनं महत ॥ १-२१७-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, "Then those foremost of chariot-warriors, Krishna and Arjuna, riding in their chariots and positioning themselves on opposite sides of that forest, initiated a great slaughter of the creatures inhabiting Khandava from all directions."' ॥ 1-217-1 ॥

english translation

यत्र यत्र हि दृश्यन्ते पराणिनः खाण्डवालयाः पलायन्तस तत्र तत्र तौ वीरौ पर्यधावताम ॥ १-२१७-२ ॥

'Whenever any of the creatures from the Khandava forest were seen attempting to escape, those mighty heroes rushed there to prevent their flight.' ॥ 1-217-2 ॥

english translation

छिद्रं हि न परपश्यन्ति रथयॊर आशु विक्रमात आविद्धाव इव दृश्येते रथिनौ तौ रथॊत्तमौ ॥ १-२१७-३ ॥

'Indeed, those two excellent chariots appeared as one, and the two warriors within them seemed like a single entity.' ॥ 1-217-3 ॥

english translation

खाण्डवे दह्यमाने तु भूतान्य अथ सहस्रशः उत्पेतुर भैरवान नादान विनदन्तॊ दिशॊ दश ॥ १-२१७-४ ॥

'While the forest was ablaze, hundreds and thousands of living creatures, emitting terrifying cries, scattered in all directions.' ॥ 1-217-4 ॥

english translation

दग्धैक देशा बहवॊ निष्टप्ताश च तथापरे सफुटिताक्षा विशीर्णाश च विप्लुताश च विचेतसः ॥ १-२१७-५ ॥

'Many were burnt in one place, others were scorched elsewhere. Some had their eyes burst, others were dismembered, and many were bewildered and disoriented.' ॥ 1-217-5 ॥
