[वै] स गन्धर्ववचः शरुत्वा तत तदा भरतर्षभ अर्जुनः परया परीत्या पूर्णचन्द्र इवाबभौ ॥ १-१६४-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana narrated, "Arjuna, the mighty prince among the Bharatas, upon hearing the words of the Gandharva, was filled with devotion and stood there, engaged in hunting deer and wild boars.' ॥ 1-164-1 ॥

उवाच च महेष्वासॊ गन्धर्वं कुरुसत्तमः जातकौतूहलॊ ऽतीव वसिष्ठस्य तपॊबलात ॥ १-१६४-२ ॥

'Then the mighty king, Arjuna of the Kurus, addressed the Gandharva, greatly curious due to Vasishtha's ascetic power.' ॥ 1-164-2 ॥

वसिष्ठ इति यस्यैतद ऋषेर नाम तवयेरितम एतद इच्छाम्य अहं शरॊतुं यथावत तद वदस्व मे ॥ १-१६४-३ ॥

'Vasishta, that is the name of the sage to whom you referred. Now, I desire to hear from you about him in detail. Please narrate to me everything exactly as it happened.' ॥ 1-164-3 ॥

य एष गन्धर्वपते पूर्वेषां नः पुरॊहितः आसीद एतन ममाचक्ष्व क एष भगवान ऋषिः ॥ १-१६४-४ ॥

'He who was the chief priest of our ancestors, O Gandharva king, tell me about him. Who is that divine sage?' ॥ 1-164-4 ॥

[ग] तपसा निर्जितौ शश्वद अजेयाव अमरैर अपि कामक्रॊधाव उभौ यस्य चरणौ संववाहतुः ॥ १-१६४-५ ॥

'Continuing, the Gandharva said, "At that moment, upon hearing the command to halt, Vasishtha's cow lifted her head and neck menacingly, terrifying to behold. With eyes ablaze with fury and emitting repeated lowing sounds, she fiercely charged at Viswamitra's soldiers from all directions."' ॥ 1-164-5 ॥
