[कुन्ती] न विषादस तवया कार्यॊ भयाद अस्मात कथं चन उपायः परिदृष्टॊ ऽतर तस्मान मॊक्षाय रक्षसः ॥ १-१४९-१ ॥

'Kunti reassured, "Do not grieve, O Brahmana, over this danger. I perceive a solution to rescue you from that Rakshasa."' ॥ 1-149-1 ॥

एकस तव सुतॊ बालः कन्या चैका तपस्विनी न ते तयॊस तथा पत्न्या गमनं तत्र रॊचये ॥ १-१४९-२ ॥

'You have only one son, who is very young, and a single daughter, vulnerable and delicate. I am unwilling for any of them, or your wife, or even yourself to go to the Rakshasa.' ॥ 1-149-2 ॥

मम पञ्च सुता बरह्मंस तेषाम एकॊ गमिष्यति तवदर्थं बलिम आदाय तस्य पापस्य रक्षसः ॥ १-१४९-३ ॥

'I have five sons, O Brahmana, let one of them go, bearing tribute to that Rakshasa on your behalf.' ॥ 1-149-3 ॥

[बराह्मण] नाहम एतत करिष्यामि जीवितार्थी कथं चन बराह्मणस्यातिथेश चैव सवार्थे पराणैर वियॊजनम ॥ १-१४९-४ ॥

'Hearing this, the Brahmana replied, "I will never allow this to be done to save my own life. I cannot sacrifice the life of a Brahmana or a guest even to save myself."' ॥ 1-149-4 ॥

न तव एतद अकुलीनासु नाधर्मिष्ठासु विद्यते यद बराह्मणार्थे विसृजेद आत्मानम अपि चात्मजम ॥ १-१४९-५ ॥

'Even those of low birth and sinful conduct refuse to do what you ask of me. It is said that one should sacrifice oneself and one's offspring for the benefit of a Brahmana.' ॥ 1-149-5 ॥
