[कुन्ती] कुतॊ मूलम इदं दुःखं जञातुम इच्छामि तत्त्वतः विदित्वा अपकर्षेयं शक्यं चेद अपकर्षितुम ॥ १-१४८-१ ॥

'[Kunti said:] "Where does this sorrow originate from, and how can I understand its essence? If it can be identified, it can also be remedied."' ॥ 1-148-1 ॥

[बराह्मण] उपपन्नं सताम एतद यद बरवीषि तपॊधने न तु दुःखम इदं शक्यं मानुषेण वयपॊहितुम ॥ १-१४८-२ ॥

'The Brahmana replied, "O possessor of ascetic wealth, your words truly befit you. However, this sorrow cannot be dispelled by any mortal."' ॥ 1-148-2 ॥

समीपे नगरस्यास्य बकॊ वसति राक्षसः ईशॊ जनपदस्यास्य पुरस्य च महाबलः ॥ १-१४८-३ ॥

'Not far from this town, there dwells a Rakshasa named Vaka, who is the lord of this region and the town.' ॥ 1-148-3 ॥

पुष्टॊ मानुषमांसेन दुर्बुद्धिः पुरुषादकः रक्षत्य असुरराण नित्यम इमं जनपदं बली ॥ १-१४८-४ ॥

'The robust but cruel Rakshasa, sustained by human flesh, governs this region with great power.' ॥ 1-148-4 ॥

नगरं चैव देशं च रक्षॊबलसमन्वितः तत कृते परचक्राच च भूतेभ्यश च न नॊ भयम ॥ १-१४८-५ ॥

'As the leader of the Asuras, he protects both the town and the country where it is located with his might. We are not afraid of the schemes of any enemy or any living being.' ॥ 1-148-5 ॥
