वेतनं तस्य विहितं शालिवाहस्य भॊजनम महिषौ पुरुषश चैकॊ यस तद आदाय गच्छति ॥ १-१४८-६ ॥

'The payment set for that Rakshasa is his sustenance, comprising a cartload of rice, two buffaloes, and a human being to deliver them to him.' ॥ 1-148-6 ॥

vetanaM tasya vihitaM zAlivAhasya bhòjanama mahiSau puruSaza caikò yasa tada AdAya gacchati ॥ 1-148-6 ॥

एकैकश चैव पुरुषस तत परयच्छति भॊजनम स वारॊ बहुभिर वर्षैर भवत्य असुतरॊ नरैः ॥ १-१४८-७ ॥

'Householders have to send him this food in succession. However, a particular family's turn comes only after many long years.' ॥ 1-148-7 ॥

ekaikaza caiva puruSasa tata parayacchati bhòjanama sa vArò bahubhira varSaira bhavatya asutarò naraiH ॥ 1-148-7 ॥

तद विमॊक्षाय ये चापि यतन्ते पुरुषाः कव चित सपुत्रदारांस तान हत्वा तद रक्षॊ भक्षयत्य उत ॥ १-१४८-८ ॥

'If there are any who attempt to evade this obligation, the Rakshasa kills them along with their children and wives, and then devours them all.' ॥ 1-148-8 ॥

tada vimòkSAya ye cApi yatante puruSAH kava cita saputradArAMsa tAna hatvA tada rakSò bhakSayatya uta ॥ 1-148-8 ॥

वेत्रकीय गृहे राजा नायं नयम इहास्थितः अनामयं जनस्यास्य येन सयाद अद्य शाश्वतम ॥ १-१४८-९ ॥

'In this realm lies a city named Vetrakiya, where the ruler of these lands resides. He lacks the knowledge of governance and doesn't diligently pursue measures to ensure the lasting safety of these territories.' ॥ 1-148-9 ॥

vetrakIya gRhe rAjA nAyaM nayama ihAsthitaH anAmayaM janasyAsya yena sayAda adya zAzvatama ॥ 1-148-9 ॥

एतद अर्हा वयं नूनं वसामॊ दुर्बलस्य ये विषये नित्यम उद्विग्नाः कुराजानम उपाश्रिताः ॥ १-१४८-१० ॥

'Certainly, we who are weak and constantly anxious in this realm should indeed strive for this.' ॥ 1-148-10 ॥
