[रु] कथं हिंसितवान सर्पान कषत्रियॊ जनमेजयः सर्पा वा हिंसितास तात किमर्थं दविजसत्तम ॥ १-१२-१ ॥

'Sauti continued, 'Ruru inquired, 'O excellent Brahmana, what motivated King Janamejaya to embark on the destruction of the serpents?'॥ 1-12-1 ॥

किमर्थं मॊक्षिताश चैव पन्नगास तेन शंस मे आस्तीकेन तद आचक्ष्व शरॊतुम इच्छाम्य अशेषतः ॥ १-१२-२ ॥

'And why and how were they saved by the wise Astika? I am anxious to hear all this in detail.'॥ 1-12-2 ॥

[रसि] शरॊष्यसि तवं रुरॊ सर्वम आस्तीक चरितं महत बराह्मणानां कथयताम इत्य उक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥ १-१२-३ ॥

'The Rishi replied, 'O Ruru, the important history of Astika you will learn from the lips of Brahmanas.' Saying this, he vanished.'॥ 1-12-3 ॥

[स] रुरुश चापि वनं सर्वं पर्यधावत समन्ततः तम ऋषिं दरष्टुम अन्विच्छन संश्रान्तॊ नयपतद भुवि ॥ १-१२-४ ॥

'Sauti continued, 'Ruru ran about in search of the missing Rishi, and having failed to find him in all the woods, fell down on the ground, fatigued.'॥ 1-12-4 ॥

लब्धसंज्ञॊ रुरुश चायात तच चाचख्यौ पितुस तदा पिता चास्य तद आख्यानं पृष्टः सर्वं नयवेदयत ॥ १-१२-५ ॥

'And revolving in his mind the words of the Rishi, he was greatly confounded and seemed to be deprived of his senses. Regaining consciousness, he came home and asked his father to relate the history in question. Thus asked, his father related all about the story.''॥ 1-12-5 ॥
