[वै] अर्जुनस तु परं यत्नम आतस्थे गुरु पूजने अस्त्रे च परमं यॊगं परियॊ दरॊणस्य चाभवत ॥ १-१२३-१ ॥

'Arjuna, however, dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the science of arms, always staying by his preceptor's side. He excelled beyond all his classmates in skill, strength, and perseverance. Although the preceptor imparted the same instruction to everyone, Arjuna stood out as the foremost in agility and expertise among his fellow pupils.' ॥ 1-123-1 ॥

दरॊणेन तु तदाहूय रहस्य उक्तॊ ऽननसाधकः अन्धकारे ऽरजुनायान्नं न देयं ते कथं चन ॥ १-१२३-२ ॥

'Seeing Arjuna's dedication to mastering the art of arms, Drona summoned the cook and instructed him in secret, "Never serve Arjuna his food in the dark, and do not reveal that I have given you this instruction."' ॥ 1-123-2 ॥

ततः कदा चिद भुञ्जाने परववौ वायुर अर्जुने तेन तत्र परदीप्तः स दीप्यमानॊ निवापितः ॥ १-१२३-३ ॥

'A few days later, while Arjuna was having his meal, a gust of wind extinguished the burning lamp. Yet, Arjuna, filled with determination, carried on eating in the darkness, guided by habit as his hand instinctively found its way to his mouth.' ॥ 1-123-3 ॥

भुङ्क्त एवार्जुनॊ भक्तं न चास्यास्याद वयमुह्यत हस्तस तेजस्विनॊ नित्यम अन्नग्रहण कारणात तद अभ्यासकृतं मत्वा रात्राव अभ्यस्त पाण्डवः ॥ १-१२३-४ ॥

'Arjuna, the devoted, continued to eat without being disturbed. For the luminous power of his hand, being habitual, never failed him in taking his food. Therefore, considering this a habitual act, Pandava Arjuna practiced it even at night. ॥ 1-123-4 ॥

'Drona, the Bharata, heard the sound of Arjuna's victory over darkness. Approaching him, Drona embraced him and spoke:' ॥ 1-123-5 ॥
