[वै] ततॊ दरुपदम आसाद्य भरद्वाजः परतापवान अब्रवीत पार्षतं राजन सखायं विद्धि माम इति ॥ १-१२२-१ ॥

'"Vaisampayana said, 'Then, O king, the mighty son of Bharadwaja presented himself before Drupada, and addressing that monarch, said, 'Regard me as your friend.'' ॥ 1-122-1 ॥

[दरुपद] अकृतेयं तव परज्ञा बरह्मन नातिसमञ्जसी यन मां बरवीषि परसभं सखा ते ऽहम इति दविज ॥ १-१२२-२ ॥

'Receiving this response from his friend, Bharadwaja's son, though joyous at heart, found it difficult to digest those words. The king of the Panchalas, intoxicated with the pride of wealth, furrowed his brows in anger and, with eyes reddened, spoke thus to Drona: 'O Brahmana, your understanding seems lacking, as you suddenly claim to be my friend!' ॥ 1-122-2 ॥

न हि राज्ञाम उदीर्णानाम एवं भूतैर नरैः कव चित सख्यं भवति मन्दात्मञ शरिया हीनैर धनच्युतैः ॥ १-१२२-३ ॥

'O person of slow understanding, it's improbable for great kings to be friends with those who are unfortunate and lacking in wealth like you!' ॥ 1-122-3 ॥

सौहृदान्य अपि जीर्यन्ते कालेन परिजीर्यताम सौहृदं मे तवया हय आसीत पूर्वं सामर्थ्य बन्धनम ॥ १-१२२-४ ॥

'Yes, indeed. There was indeed friendship between you and me before, as we were then equally situated. However, Time, which diminishes everything as it passes, also diminishes friendship.' ॥ 1-122-4 ॥

न सख्यम अजरं लॊके जातु दृश्येत कर्हि चित कामॊ वैनं विहरति करॊधश चैनं परवृश्चति ॥ १-१२२-५ ॥

'In this world, true happiness, which is ageless, is rarely seen at any time. Lust indulges in this, while anger overshadows it.' ॥ 1-122-5 ॥
