[जरितारि] पुरतः कृच्छ्रकालस्य धीमाञ जागर्ति पूरुषः स कृच्छ्रकालं संप्राप्य वयथां नैवैति कर्हि चित ॥ १-२२३-१ ॥

'Jaritari said, "A wise person remains vigilant in the face of death. Thus, when the moment of death approaches, he experiences no suffering."' ॥ 1-223-1 ॥

यस तु कृच्छ्रम असंप्राप्तं विचेता नावबुध्यते स कृच्छ्रकाले वयथितॊ न परजानाति किं चन ॥ १-२२३-२ ॥

'But the person with a perplexed soul, who does not stay vigilant, experiences the pangs of death when the hour arrives and never attains salvation.' ॥ 1-223-2 ॥

[सारिसृक्व] धीरस तवम असि मेधावी पराणकृच्छ्रम इदं च नः शूरः पराज्ञॊ बहूनां हि भवत्य एकॊ न संशयः ॥ १-२२३-३ ॥

'The second brother, Sarisrikka, said, "You are patient and intelligent. The time has come when our lives are in danger. Without a doubt, it is often one among many who becomes both wise and brave."' ॥ 1-223-3 ॥

[सतम्बमित्र] जयेष्ठस तराता भवति वै जयेष्ठॊ मुञ्चति कृच्छ्रतः जयेष्ठश चेन न परजानाति कनीयान किं करिष्यति ॥ १-२२३-४ ॥

'The third brother, Satambamitra, said, "The eldest brother is regarded as the protector. It is he who rescues the younger ones from danger. If the eldest himself fails to rescue them, what can the younger ones do?"' ॥ 1-223-4 ॥

[दरॊण] हिरण्यरेतास तवरितॊ जवलन्न आयाति नः कषयम सप्त जिह्वॊ ऽनलः कषामॊ लेलिहानॊपसर्पति ॥ १-२२३-५ ॥

'The youngest brother, Drona, said, "The fierce god of fire, with seven tongues and seven mouths, swiftly approaches our home, blazing brightly and consuming everything in its path."' ॥ 1-223-5 ॥
