[ज] बालॊ वाक्यं सथविर इव परभाषते; नायं बालः सथविरॊ ऽयं मतॊ मे इच्छाम्य अहं वरम अस्मै परदातुं; तन मे विप्रा वितरध्वं समेताः ॥ १-५१-१ ॥

'Janamejaya exclaimed, "Despite his youthful appearance, he articulates words akin to a sagacious elder. He is no ordinary boy but a discerning and aged individual. I believe I wish to grant him a boon. Hence, O Brahmanas, grant me the requisite permission."' ॥ 1-51-1 ॥

[सदस्याह] बालॊ ऽपि विप्रॊ मान्य एवेह राज्ञां; यश चाविद्वान यश च विद्वान यथावत सर्वान कामांस तवत्त एषॊ ऽरहते ऽदय; यथा च नस तक्षक एति शीघ्रम ॥ १-५१-२ ॥

'The assembly members remarked, "Even a young Brahmana merits the reverence of kings, especially the erudite ones. This boy is worthy of having all his wishes fulfilled by you, but only after Takshaka arrives swiftly."' ॥ 1-51-2 ॥

[स] वयाहर्तुकामे वरदे नृपे दविजं; वरं वृणीष्वेति ततॊ ऽभयुवाच हॊता वाक्यं नातिहृष्टान्तर आत्मा; कर्मण्य अस्मिंस तक्षकॊ नैति तावत ॥ १-५१-३ ॥

'Sauti continued, "The king, willing to bestow a boon, said, 'Make a request.' However, the Hotri, with a tinge of dissatisfaction, replied, 'Takshaka has not yet entered this sacrificial ritual.'" ॥ 1-51-3 ॥

[ज] यथा चेदं कर्म समाप्यते मे; यथा च नस तक्षक एति शीघ्रम तथा भवन्तः परयतन्तु सर्वे; परं शक्त्या स हि मे विद्विषाणः ॥ १-५१-४ ॥

'Janamejaya responded, "Put forth your utmost efforts to ensure the successful completion of my sacrifice, and hasten the arrival of Takshaka. He is my adversary."' ॥ 1-51-4 ॥

[रत्विजह] यथाशास्त्राणि नः पराहुर यथा शंसति पावकः इन्द्रस्य भवने राजंस तक्षकॊ भयपीडितः ॥ १-५१-५ ॥

'The Ritwiks responded, "O monarch, by the scriptures and the testimony of fire, it appears that Takshaka is presently residing in the abode of Indra, distressed by fear."' ॥ 1-51-5 ॥
