[व] अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य देव यानी नृपॊत्तम वनं तद एव निर्याता करीडार्थं वरवर्णिनी ॥ १-७६-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana narrated, "After a considerable period, O greatest of kings, Devayani, possessing the most exquisite complexion, ventured into the woods for leisure."' ॥ 1-76-1 ॥

तेन दासी सहस्रेण सार्धं शर्मिष्ठया तदा तम एव देशं संप्राप्ता यथाकामं चचार सा ताभिः सखीभिः सहिता सर्वाभिर मुदिता भृशम ॥ १-७६-२ ॥

'And accompanied by Sarmishtha with her thousand maids she reached the same spot and began to wander freely. And waited upon by all those companions she felt supremely happy.' ॥ 1-76-2 ॥

करीडन्त्यॊ ऽभिरताः सर्वाः पिबन्त्यॊ मधुमाधवीम खादन्त्यॊ विविधान भक्ष्यान विदशन्त्यः फलानि च ॥ १-७६-३ ॥

'Engaged in various games and revelries, all of them joyously drank the sweet Madhavi liquor. They ate various delicacies and enjoyed different fruits.' ॥ 1-76-3 ॥

पुनश च नाहुषॊ राजा मृगलिप्सुर यदृच्छया तम एव देशं संप्राप्तॊ जलार्थी शरमकर्शितः ॥ १-७६-४ ॥

'And just at that time, king Yayati, the son of Nahusha, again came there tired and thirsty, in course of his wanderings, in search of deer.' ॥ 1-76-4 ॥

ददृशे देव यानीं च शर्मिष्ठां ताश च यॊषितः पिबन्तीर ललमानाश च दिव्याभरणभूषिताः ॥ १-७६-५ ॥

'The king beheld Devayani, Sarmishtha, and their companions, all adorned with heavenly ornaments, exuding a graceful languor from the nectar of flowers they had imbibed.' ॥ 1-76-5 ॥
