उपविष्टां च ददृशे देव यानीं शुचिस्मिताम रूपेणाप्रतिमां तासां सत्रीणां मध्ये वराङ्गनाम शर्मिष्ठया सेव्यमानां पादसंवाहनादिभिः ।। १-७६-६ ।।

sanskrit

'And Devayani of sweet smiles, unrivaled for beauty and possessed of the fairest complexion amongst them all, was reclining at her ease. And she was waited upon by Sarmishtha who was gently kneading her feet.' ।। 1-76-6 ।।

english translation

upaviSTAM ca dadRze deva yAnIM zucismitAma rUpeNApratimAM tAsAM satrINAM madhye varAGganAma zarmiSThayA sevyamAnAM pAdasaMvAhanAdibhiH || 1-76-6 ||

hk transliteration

[य] दवाभ्यां कन्या सहस्राभ्यां दवे कन्ये परिवारिते गॊत्रे च नामनी चैव दवयॊः पृच्छामि वाम अहम ।। १-७६-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Seeing them, King Yayati addressed them gently, saying, "O gracious ones, may I know your names and your lineage?"' ।। 1-76-7 ।।

english translation

[ya] davAbhyAM kanyA sahasrAbhyAM dave kanye parivArite gòtre ca nAmanI caiva davayòH pRcchAmi vAma ahama || 1-76-7 ||

hk transliteration

[देव] आख्यास्याम्य अहम आदत्स्व वचनं मे नराधिप शुक्रॊ नामासुरगुरुः सुतां जानीहि तस्य माम ।। १-७६-८ ।।

sanskrit

'It seems that these two thousand maids wait on you two.' 'Hearing the monarch, Devayani then answered, 'Listen to me, O best of men. Know that I am the daughter of Sukra, the spiritual guide of the Asuras.' ।। 1-76-8 ।।

english translation

[deva] AkhyAsyAmya ahama Adatsva vacanaM me narAdhipa zukrò nAmAsuraguruH sutAM jAnIhi tasya mAma || 1-76-8 ||

hk transliteration

इयं च मे सखी दासी यत्राहं तत्र गामिनी दुहिता दानवेन्द्रस्य शर्मिष्ठा वृषपर्वणः ।। १-७६-९ ।।

sanskrit

'This companion of mine serves as my maid and accompanies me wherever I go. She is Sarmishtha, the daughter of the Asura king Vrishaparvan.' ।। 1-76-9 ।।

english translation

iyaM ca me sakhI dAsI yatrAhaM tatra gAminI duhitA dAnavendrasya zarmiSThA vRSaparvaNaH || 1-76-9 ||

hk transliteration

[य] कथं नु ते सखी दासी कन्येयं वरवर्णिनी असुरेन्द्र सुता सुभ्रु परं कौतूहलं हि मे ।। १-७६-१० ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati then asked, 'I am curious to know why is this thy companion of fair eye-brows, this maiden of the fairest complexion, the daughter of the Asura chief thy waiting-maid!' ।। 1-76-10 ।।

english translation

[ya] kathaM nu te sakhI dAsI kanyeyaM varavarNinI asurendra sutA subhru paraM kautUhalaM hi me || 1-76-10 ||
