मैवं जीर्णम उपासिष्ठाः सख्यं नवम उपाकुरु आसीत सख्यं दविजश्रेष्ठ तवया मे ऽरथनिबन्धनम ।। १-१२२-६ ।।

sanskrit

'O noble one, do not speak thus. Grant me the same friendship as before. Such friendship as yours, O best of twice-born, was the very cause of my entreaty.' ।। 1-122-6 ।।

english translation

maivaM jIrNama upAsiSThAH sakhyaM navama upAkuru AsIta sakhyaM davijazreSTha tavayA me 'rathanibandhanama || 1-122-6 ||

hk transliteration

न दरिद्रॊ वसुमतॊ नाविद्वान विदुषः सखा शूरस्य न सखा कलीबः सखिपूर्वं किम इष्यते ।। १-१२२-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Friendship cannot endure between a poor man and a rich man, between a man of learning and an ignorant mind, between a hero and a coward. Why then do you seek to maintain our previous friendship?' ।। 1-122-7 ।।

english translation

na daridrò vasumatò nAvidvAna viduSaH sakhA zUrasya na sakhA kalIbaH sakhipUrvaM kima iSyate || 1-122-7 ||

hk transliteration

ययॊर एव समं वित्तं ययॊर एव समं कुलम तयॊः सख्यविवाहश च न तु पुष्टविपुष्टयॊः ।। १-१२२-८ ।।

sanskrit

'By equality in wealth and equality in the family background alone, true friendship and marriage between two individuals are not established; rather, it is the harmony between their intellects that truly solidifies their friendship and union.' ।। 1-122-8 ।।

english translation

yayòra eva samaM vittaM yayòra eva samaM kulama tayòH sakhyavivAhaza ca na tu puSTavipuSTayòH || 1-122-8 ||

hk transliteration

नाश्रॊत्रियः शरॊत्रियस्य नारथी रथिनः सखा नाराज्ञा संगतं राज्ञः सखिपूर्वं किम इष्यते ।। १-१२२-९ ।।

sanskrit

'Those of impure birth can never truly be companions to those of noble lineage; one devoid of skill in warfare can never truly be a comrade to a skilled warrior; and one lacking in regal status can never truly claim a king as a friend. Hence, why do you seek to maintain the bond of our past friendship?' ।। 1-122-9 ।।

english translation

nAzròtriyaH zaròtriyasya nArathI rathinaH sakhA nArAjJA saMgataM rAjJaH sakhipUrvaM kima iSyate || 1-122-9 ||

hk transliteration

[वै] दरुपदेनैवम उक्तस तु भारद्वाजः परतापवान मुहूर्तं चिन्तयाम आस मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुतः ।। १-१२२-१० ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, 'Thus addressed by Drupada, the mighty son of Bharadwaja became filled with wrath, and reflecting for a moment, made up his mind as to his course of action.' ।। 1-122-10 ।।

english translation

[vai] darupadenaivama uktasa tu bhAradvAjaH paratApavAna muhUrtaM cintayAma Asa manyunAbhipariplutaH || 1-122-10 ||
