स विनिश्चित्य मनसा पाञ्चालं परति बुद्धिमान जगाम कुरुमुख्यानां नगरं नागसाह्वयम ॥ १-१२२-११ ॥
'Observing the insolence of the Panchala king, he determined to address it decisively. Quickly departing from the Panchala capital, Drona directed his path towards the Kurus' capital, known as Hastinapura.' ॥ 1-122-11 ॥

कुमारास तव अथ निष्क्रम्य समेता गजसाह्वयात करीडन्तॊ वीटया तत्र वीराः पर्यचरन मुदा ॥ १-१२२-१२ ॥
'Afterward, your sons, together with the elephants, left, sporting joyfully in the streets of Hastinapura.' ॥ 1-122-12 ॥

पपात कूपे सा वीटा तेषां वै करीडतां तदा न च ते परत्यपद्यन्त कर्म वीटॊपलब्धये ॥ १-१२२-१३ ॥
'Drona had been residing in the household of Kripa in seclusion for some time when, one day, the brave princes, together in a group, emerged from Hastinapura. As they left the city, they engaged in playing with a ball, joyfully wandering about. Unfortunately, the ball they were playing with accidentally fell into a well. Instantly, the princes made every effort to retrieve it from the well.' ॥ 1-122-13 ॥

अथ दरॊणः कुमारांस तान दृष्ट्वा कृत्यवतस तदा परहस्य मन्दं पैशल्याद अभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान ॥ १-१२२-१४ ॥
'Then Drona, seeing those princes acting earnestly, spoke to them in a gentle tone, with a smile on his face.' ॥ 1-122-14 ॥

अहॊ नु धिग बलं कषात्रं धिग एतां वः कृतास्त्रताम भरतस्यान्वये जाता ये वीटां नाधिगच्छत ॥ १-१२२-१५ ॥
'Addressing them, he said, "Shame on your prowess as warriors, and shame as well on your proficiency in arms! You are born into the lineage of Bharata! How is it that you cannot retrieve the ball from the bottom of this well?' ॥ 1-122-15 ॥
