[स] शरुत्वा तु सर्पसत्राय दीक्षितं जनमेजयम अभ्यागच्छद ऋषिर विद्वान कृष्णद्वैपायनस तदा ॥ १-५४-१ ॥
'Sauti narrated, 'Upon learning that Janamejaya had undertaken the snake sacrifice, the wise sage Krishna-Dwaipayana, also known as Vyasa, proceeded to the event.' ॥ 1-54-1 ॥
english translation
[sa] zarutvA tu sarpasatrAya dIkSitaM janamejayama abhyAgacchada RSira vidvAna kRSNadvaipAyanasa tadA ॥ 1-54-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजनयाम आस यं काली शक्तेः पुत्रात पराशरात कन्यैव यमुना दवीपे पाण्डवानां पितामहम ॥ १-५४-२ ॥
'The grandfather of the Pandavas, Janamejaya, was born on an island in the Yamuna River to the maiden Kali, daughter of Sakti, through Parasara, the son of Shukracharya.' ॥ 1-54-2 ॥

janayAma Asa yaM kAlI zakteH putrAta parAzarAta kanyaiva yamunA davIpe pANDavAnAM pitAmahama ॥ 1-54-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजातमात्रश च यः सद्य इष्ट्या देहम अवीवृधत वेदांश चाधिजगे साङ्गान सेतिहासान महायशाः ॥ १-५४-३ ॥
'The eminent individual, upon birth, effortlessly expanded his body through sheer willpower, acquiring mastery over the Vedas and their ancillary disciplines, as well as delving into the vast realm of historical knowledge.' ॥ 1-54-3 ॥

jAtamAtraza ca yaH sadya iSTyA dehama avIvRdhata vedAMza cAdhijage sAGgAna setihAsAna mahAyazAH ॥ 1-54-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयं नातितपसा कश चिन न वेदाध्ययनेन च न वरतैर नॊपवासैश च न परसूत्या न मन्युना ॥ १-५४-४ ॥
'And effortlessly, he attained that which eluded others through ascetic practices, Vedic studies, vows, fasting, progeny, and sacrificial rituals.' ॥ 1-54-4 ॥

yaM nAtitapasA kaza cina na vedAdhyayanena ca na varataira nòpavAsaiza ca na parasUtyA na manyunA ॥ 1-54-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविव्यासैकं चतुर्धा यॊ वेदं वेद विदां वरः परावरज्ञॊ बरह्मर्षिः कविः सत्यव्रतः शुचिः ॥ १-५४-५ ॥
'The foremost among the knowers of the Vedas, he divided the scriptures into four parts. This Brahmana Rishi possessed profound knowledge of the supreme Brahma, intuitive understanding of the past, holiness, and a deep commitment to truth.' ॥ 1-54-5 ॥

vivyAsaikaM caturdhA yò vedaM veda vidAM varaH parAvarajJò barahmarSiH kaviH satyavrataH zuciH ॥ 1-54-5 ॥
