[स] इतिहासम इमं वृद्धाः पुराणं परिचक्षते कृष्णद्वैपायन परॊक्तं नैमिषारण्यवासिनः ॥ १-१३-६ ॥
'Sauti said, 'This history (first) recited by Krishna-Dwaipayana, is called a Purana by the Brahmanas. It was formerly narrated by my wise father, Lomaharshana, the disciple of Vyasa, before the dwellers of the Naimisha forest, at their request.'॥ 1-13-6 ॥
english translation
पूर्वं परचॊदितः सूतः पिता मे लॊमहर्षणः शिष्यॊ वयासस्य मेधावी बराह्मणैर इदम उक्तवान ॥ १-१३-७ ॥
'Earlier, upon being prompted by others, Suta, my father, Lomaharshana, A disciple of Vyasa, the wise one, spoke these words to the Brahmanas.'॥ 1-13-7 ॥
english translation
तस्माद अहम उपश्रुत्य परवक्ष्यामि यथातथम इदम आस्तीकम आख्यानं तुभ्यं शौनक पृच्छते ॥ १-१३-८ ॥
'I was present at the recital, and, O Saunaka, since thou askest me, I shall narrate the history of Astika exactly as I heard it.'॥ 1-13-8 ॥
english translation
आस्तीकस्य पिता हय आसीत परजापतिसमः परभुः बरह्म चारी यताहारस तपस्य उग्रे रतः सदा ॥ १-१३-९ ॥
'The father of Astika was powerful like Prajapati. He was a Brahma-charin, always engaged in austere devotions.'॥ 1-13-9 ॥

जरत्कारुर इति खयात ऊर्ध्वरेता महान ऋषिः यायावराणां धर्मज्ञः परवरः संशितव्रतः ॥ १-१३-१० ॥
'He ate sparingly, was a great ascetic, and had his lust under complete control. And he was known by the name of Jaratkaru. That foremost one among the Yayavaras, virtuous and of rigid vows, highly blessed and endued with great ascetic power, once undertook a journey over the world.'॥ 1-13-10 ॥
