अटमानः कदा चित स सवान ददर्श पितामहान लम्बमानान महागर्ते पादैर ऊर्ध्वैर अधॊमुखान ॥ १-१३-११ ॥
'Endued with great energy, he practiced religious austerities, hard to be practiced by men of unrestrained souls. The sage lived upon air only and renounced sleep forever. Thus going about like a blazing fire, one day he happened to see his ancestors, hanging heads down in a great hole, their feet pointing upwards.'॥ 1-13-11 ॥

तान अब्रवीत स दृष्ट्वैव जरत्कारुः पितामहान के भवन्तॊ ऽवलम्बन्ते गर्ते ऽसमिन वा अधॊमुखाः ॥ १-१३-१२ ॥
'On seeing them, Jaratkaru addressed them, saying: ' Who are you thus hanging heads down in this hole by a rope of virana fibres that is again secretly eaten into on all sides by a rat living here?'॥ 1-13-12 ॥
english translation
वीरणस्तम्बके लग्नाः सर्वतः परिभक्षिते मूषकेन निगूढेन गर्ते ऽसमिन नित्यवासिना ॥ १-१३-१३ ॥
'Hanging onto a huge pillar, devoured from all sides, Concealed by a mouse, dwelling eternally in this ocean.'॥ 1-13-13 ॥
english translation
[पितरह] यायावरा नाम वयम ऋषयः संशितव्रताः संतानप्रक्षयाद बरह्मन्न अधॊ गच्छाम मेदिनीम ॥ १-१३-१४ ॥
'We, known as Yayavaras, are sages, dedicated to strict vows, Due to the decline in our progeny, O Brahmana, we are descending below the earth.'॥ 1-13-14 ॥

अस्माकं संततिस तव एकॊ जरत्कारुर इति शरुतः मन्दभाग्यॊ ऽलपभाग्यानां तप एव समास्थितः ॥ १-१३-१५ ॥
We have a son named Jaratkaru. Woe to us! That wretch hath entered upon a life of austerities only.' ॥ 1-13-15 ॥
