[य] इमं भौमं नरकं कषीणपुण्यः; परवेष्टुम उर्वीं गगनाद विप्रकीर्णः उक्त्वाहं वः परपतिष्याम्य अनन्तरं; तवरन्ति मां बराह्मणा लॊकपालाः ॥ १-८७-६ ॥

'Yayati replied, "Having descended from heaven due to the depletion of all my merits, I am destined to enter the infernal realms of the Earth. Once our conversation concludes, I shall proceed there."' ॥ 1-87-6 ॥

english translation

[ya] imaM bhaumaM narakaM kaSINapuNyaH; paraveSTuma urvIM gaganAda viprakIrNaH uktvAhaM vaH parapatiSyAmya anantaraM; tavaranti mAM barAhmaNA lòkapAlAH ॥ 1-87-6 ॥

सतां सकाशे तु वृतः परपातस; ते संगता गुणवन्तश च सर्वे शक्राच च लब्धॊ हि वरॊ मयैष; पतिष्यता भूमितले नरेन्द्र ॥ १-८७-७ ॥

'Even now, the guardians of the cardinal directions urge me to proceed there. O king, I have obtained a boon from Indra that, though I must descend to the earth, I shall do so amidst the wise and virtuous. You all gathered here are indeed wise and virtuous.' ॥ 1-87-7 ॥

satAM sakAze tu vRtaH parapAtasa; te saMgatA guNavantaza ca sarve zakrAca ca labdhò hi varò mayaiSa; patiSyatA bhUmitale narendra ॥ 1-87-7 ॥

[आ] पृच्छामि तवां मा परपत परपातं; यदि लॊकाः पार्थिव सन्ति मे ऽतर यद्य अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि शरिताः; कषेत्रज्ञं तवां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥ १-८७-८ ॥

'Ashtaka said, "You are well-versed in all matters. I inquire, O king, whether there are any realms for me to inhabit in heaven or in the celestial realms? If so, then even as you descend, you shall not fall."' ॥ 1-87-8 ॥

english translation

[A] pRcchAmi tavAM mA parapata parapAtaM; yadi lòkAH pArthiva santi me 'tara yadya antarikSe yadi vA divi zaritAH; kaSetrajJaM tavAM tasya dharmasya manye ॥ 1-87-8 ॥

[य] यावत पृथिव्यां विहितं गवाश्वं; सहारण्यैः पशुभिः पर्वतैश च तावल लॊका दिवि ते संस्थिता वै; तथा विजानीहि नरेन्द्र सिंह ॥ १-८७-९ ॥

'Yayati replied, "O king, indeed, in heaven, there are realms for your enjoyment equivalent to the count of cows, horses, and wild animals that inhabit the earth and its mountains."' ॥ 1-87-9 ॥

[ya] yAvata pRthivyAM vihitaM gavAzvaM; sahAraNyaiH pazubhiH parvataiza ca tAvala lòkA divi te saMsthitA vai; tathA vijAnIhi narendra siMha ॥ 1-87-9 ॥

[आ] तांस ते ददामि मा परपत परपातं; ये मे लॊका दिवि राजेन्द्र सन्ति यद्य अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि शरितास; तान आक्रम कषिप्रम अमित्रसाह ॥ १-८७-१० ॥

'Ashtaka declared, "Should there exist realms in heaven as rewards for my pious deeds, O king, I bestow them upon you. Hence, even as you descend, you shall not truly fall. Accept them swiftly, whether they are in the firmament or the heavens. May your distress end."' ॥ 1-87-10 ॥

english translation

[A] tAMsa te dadAmi mA parapata parapAtaM; ye me lòkA divi rAjendra santi yadya antarikSe yadi vA divi zaritAsa; tAna Akrama kaSiprama amitrasAha ॥ 1-87-10 ॥
