वनस्पतींश चौषधीश चाविशन्ति; अपॊ वायुं पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षम चतुष्पदं दविपदं चापि सर्वम; एवं भूता गर्भभूता भवन्ति ।। १-८५-११ ।।

sanskrit

' Yayati explained, "They enter plants and herbs, water, air, earth, and the sky. They become part of every living form, whether four-legged or two-legged. In this way, beings, after being conceived in the womb, manifest in various forms throughout nature."' ।। 1-85-11 ।।

english translation

vanaspatIMza cauSadhIza cAvizanti; apò vAyuM pRthivIM cAntarikSama catuSpadaM davipadaM cApi sarvama; evaM bhUtA garbhabhUtA bhavanti || 1-85-11 ||

hk transliteration

[आ] अन्यद वपुर विदधातीह गर्भ; उताहॊ सवित सवेन कामेन याति आपद्यमानॊ नरयॊनिम एताम; आचक्ष्व मे संशयात परब्रवीमि ।। १-८५-१२ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka said, "Please tell me, for I am uncertain. Does a being that has taken on a human form enter the womb in its original shape or a different one? And how does it obtain its unique and recognizable form, along with eyes, ears, and consciousness? I ask you to clarify these doubts for me."' ।। 1-85-12 ।।

english translation

[A] anyada vapura vidadhAtIha garbha; utAhò savita savena kAmena yAti ApadyamAnò narayònima etAma; AcakSva me saMzayAta parabravImi || 1-85-12 ||

शरीरदेहादि समुच्छ्रयं च; चक्षुः शरॊत्रे लभते केन संज्ञाम एतत तत्त्वं सर्वम आचक्ष्व पृष्टः; कषेत्रज्ञं तवां तात मन्याम सर्वे ।। १-८५-१३ ।।

sanskrit

'By what process does one gain the assembly of the body and organs, sight, and hearing, and how does one acquire consciousness? You have been asked about the essential nature of these phenomena. We all consider you, O revered one, as the knower of the field (the body), fully knowledgeable about these matters. Please enlighten us.' ।। 1-85-13 ।।

english translation

zarIradehAdi samucchrayaM ca; cakSuH zaròtre labhate kena saMjJAma etata tattvaM sarvama AcakSva pRSTaH; kaSetrajJaM tavAM tAta manyAma sarve || 1-85-13 ||

hk transliteration

[य] वायुः समुत्कर्षति गर्भयॊनिम; ऋतौ रेतः पुष्परसानुपृक्तम स तत्र तन्मात्र कृताधिकारः; करमेण संवर्धयतीह गर्भम ।। १-८५-१४ ।।

sanskrit

'The wind extracts the embryo from the womb. During the proper season, it mixes it with the essence of flowers and fruits. There, the wind, as the primal agent, imparts qualities to it, developing the embryo through its actions.' ।। 1-85-14 ।।

english translation

[ya] vAyuH samutkarSati garbhayònima; Rtau retaH puSparasAnupRktama sa tatra tanmAtra kRtAdhikAraH; karameNa saMvardhayatIha garbhama || 1-85-14 ||

स जायमानॊ विगृहीत गात्रः; षड जञाननिष्ठायतनॊ मनुष्यः स शरॊत्राभ्यां वेदयतीह शब्दं; सर्वं रूपं पश्यति चक्षुषा च ।। १-८५-१५ ।।

sanskrit

'Upon birth, the human, embodying six centers of consciousness, assumes a physical form. With ears, he discerns sounds; with eyes, he perceives all forms.' ।। 1-85-15 ।।

english translation

sa jAyamAnò vigRhIta gAtraH; SaDa jaJAnaniSThAyatanò manuSyaH sa zaròtrAbhyAM vedayatIha zabdaM; sarvaM rUpaM pazyati cakSuSA ca || 1-85-15 ||
