[आ] यदा तु तान वितुदन्ते वयांसि; तथा गृध्राः शितिकण्ठाः पतंगाः कथं भवन्ति कथम आभवन्ति; न भौमम अन्यं नरकं शृणॊमि ।। १-८५-६ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka spoke, "As life fades with age, vultures, peacocks, insects, and worms consume the human body. Where does man then dwell? How does he return to life? I have never heard of any earthly hell called Bhauma!"' ।। 1-85-6 ।।

english translation

[A] yadA tu tAna vitudante vayAMsi; tathA gRdhrAH zitikaNThAH pataMgAH kathaM bhavanti kathama Abhavanti; na bhaumama anyaM narakaM zRNòmi || 1-85-6 ||

hk transliteration

[य] ऊर्ध्वं देहात कर्मणॊ जृम्भमाणाद; वयक्तं पृथिव्याम अनुसंचरन्ति इमं भौमं नरकं ते पतन्ति; नावेक्षन्ते वर्षपूगान अनेकान ।। १-८५-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati explained, "Upon the body's dissolution, based on his deeds, a man reenters his mother's womb, existing there first as an undefined form. Shortly thereafter, he takes on a distinct shape, reemerges into the world, and treads upon the earth. This cycle represents the earthly hell (Bhauma) into which he falls, for he does not perceive the end of his existence nor acts towards his liberation."' ।। 1-85-7 ।।

english translation

[ya] UrdhvaM dehAta karmaNò jRmbhamANAda; vayaktaM pRthivyAma anusaMcaranti imaM bhaumaM narakaM te patanti; nAvekSante varSapUgAna anekAna || 1-85-7 ||

hk transliteration

षष्टिं सहस्राणि पतन्ति वयॊम्नि; तथा अशीतिं परिवत्सराणि तान वै तुदन्ति परपततः परपातं; भीमा भौमा राक्षसास तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राः ।। १-८५-८ ।।

sanskrit

'Some dwell for sixty thousand years, some, for eighty-thousand years in heaven, and then they fall. And as they fall, they are attacked by certain Rakshasas in the form of sons, grandsons, and other relatives, that withdraw their hearts from acting for their emancipation.' ।। 1-85-8 ।।

english translation

SaSTiM sahasrANi patanti vayòmni; tathA azItiM parivatsarANi tAna vai tudanti parapatataH parapAtaM; bhImA bhaumA rAkSasAsa tIkSNadaMSTrAH || 1-85-8 ||

hk transliteration

[आ] यद एनसस ते पततस तुदन्ति; भीमा भौमा राक्षसास तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राः कथं भवन्ति कथम आभवन्ति; कथं भूता गर्भभूता भवन्ति ।। १-८५-९ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka inquired, "Due to what misdeeds are beings, as they descend from heaven, assailed by these ferocious, sharp-fanged Rakshasas? Why do they not simply cease to exist? How do they once more enter a womb, endowed with faculties?"' ।। 1-85-9 ।।

english translation

[A] yada enasasa te patatasa tudanti; bhImA bhaumA rAkSasAsa tIkSNadaMSTrAH kathaM bhavanti kathama Abhavanti; kathaM bhUtA garbhabhUtA bhavanti || 1-85-9 ||

hk transliteration

[य] अस्रं रेतः पुष्पफलानुपृक्तम; अन्वेति तद वै पुरुषेण सृष्टम स वै तस्या रज आपद्यते वै; स गर्भभूतः समुपैति तत्र ।। १-८५-१० ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati replied, "After descending from heaven, the being becomes a subtle substance residing in water. This water transforms into semen, which contains the seed of vitality. Entering the mother's womb during the appropriate time."' ।। 1-85-10 ।।

english translation

[ya] asraM retaH puSpaphalAnupRktama; anveti tada vai puruSeNa sRSTama sa vai tasyA raja Apadyate vai; sa garbhabhUtaH samupaiti tatra || 1-85-10 ||
