घराणेन गन्धं जिह्वयाथॊ रसं च; तवचा सपर्शं मनसा वेद भावम इत्य अष्टकेहॊपचितिं च विद्धि; महात्मनः पराणभृतः शरीरे ।। १-८५-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Through the nose, he senses smells; with the tongue, tastes flavors; through the skin, feels touch; and with the mind, he understands emotions. Know this to be the nurture of Ashtaka, the great soul, in the body of the living.' ।। 1-85-16 ।।

english translation

gharANena gandhaM jihvayAthò rasaM ca; tavacA saparzaM manasA veda bhAvama itya aSTakehòpacitiM ca viddhi; mahAtmanaH parANabhRtaH zarIre || 1-85-16 ||

hk transliteration

[आ] यः संस्थितः पुरुषॊ दह्यते वा; निखन्यते वापि निघृष्यते वा अभाव भूतः स विनाशम एत्य; केनात्मानं चेतयते पुरस्तात ।। १-८५-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka questioned, "When a body is cremated or obliterated after death, being reduced to nothingness, by what mechanism or principle does revival occur?"' ।। 1-85-17 ।।

english translation

[A] yaH saMsthitaH puruSò dahyate vA; nikhanyate vApi nighRSyate vA abhAva bhUtaH sa vinAzama etya; kenAtmAnaM cetayate purastAta || 1-85-17 ||

hk transliteration

[य] हित्वा सॊ ऽसून सुप्तवन निष्ठनित्वा; पुरॊधाय सुकृतं दुष्कृतं च अन्यां यॊनिं पवनाग्रानुसारी; हित्वा देहं भजते राजसिंह ।। १-८५-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati said, 'O lion among kings, the person that dies assumes a subtle form; and retaining consciousness of all his acts as in a dream, he enters some other form with a speed quicker than that of air itself.' ।। 1-85-18 ।।

english translation

[ya] hitvA sò 'sUna suptavana niSThanitvA; puròdhAya sukRtaM duSkRtaM ca anyAM yòniM pavanAgrAnusArI; hitvA dehaM bhajate rAjasiMha || 1-85-18 ||

hk transliteration

पुण्यां यॊनिं पुण्यकृतॊ वरजन्ति; पापां यॊनिं पापकृतॊ वरजन्ति कीटाः पतंगाश च भवन्ति पापा; न मे विवक्षास्ति महानुभाव ।। १-८५-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'The virtuous attain to a superior, and the vicious to an inferior form of existence. The vicious become worms and insects. I have nothing more to say, O thou of great and pure soul!' ।। 1-85-19 ।।

english translation

puNyAM yòniM puNyakRtò varajanti; pApAM yòniM pApakRtò varajanti kITAH pataMgAza ca bhavanti pApA; na me vivakSAsti mahAnubhAva || 1-85-19 ||

hk transliteration

चतुष्पदा दविपदाः षट्पदाश च; तथा भूता गर्भभूता भवन्ति आख्यातम एतन निखिलेन सर्वं; भूयस तु किं पृच्छसि राजसिंह ।। १-८५-२० ।।

sanskrit

'I have explained to you the process of birth, detailing how beings develop from embryonic forms into various creatures with different numbers of limbs. Is there anything else you would like to inquire?' ।। 1-85-20 ।।

english translation

catuSpadA davipadAH SaTpadAza ca; tathA bhUtA garbhabhUtA bhavanti AkhyAtama etana nikhilena sarvaM; bhUyasa tu kiM pRcchasi rAjasiMha || 1-85-20 ||
