घराणेन गन्धं जिह्वयाथॊ रसं च; तवचा सपर्शं मनसा वेद भावम इत्य अष्टकेहॊपचितिं च विद्धि; महात्मनः पराणभृतः शरीरे ॥ १-८५-१६ ॥

sanskrit

'Through the nose, he senses smells; with the tongue, tastes flavors; through the skin, feels touch; and with the mind, he understands emotions. Know this to be the nurture of Ashtaka, the great soul, in the body of the living.' ॥ 1-85-16 ॥

english translation

gharANena gandhaM jihvayAthò rasaM ca; tavacA saparzaM manasA veda bhAvama itya aSTakehòpacitiM ca viddhi; mahAtmanaH parANabhRtaH zarIre ॥ 1-85-16 ॥
