[आ] किंस्वित कृत्वा लभते तात लॊकान; मर्त्यः शरेष्ठांस तपसा विद्यया वा तन मे पृष्टः शंस सर्वं यथावच; छुभाँल लॊकान येन गच्छेत करमेण ।। १-८५-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka queried, "O revered one, by what means do individuals reach those exalted realms from which they do not return to this earthly existence? Is it through ascetic practices, or is it through the acquisition of knowledge? Moreover, how does one progressively ascend to those blissful abodes? I ask you to elucidate fully on this matter."' ।। 1-85-21 ।।

english translation

[A] kiMsvita kRtvA labhate tAta lòkAna; martyaH zareSThAMsa tapasA vidyayA vA tana me pRSTaH zaMsa sarvaM yathAvaca; chubhA~la lòkAna yena gaccheta karameNa || 1-85-21 ||

hk transliteration

[य] तपश च दानं च शमॊ दमश च; हरीर आर्जवं सर्वभूतानुकम्पा नश्यन्ति मानेन तमॊ ऽभिभूताः; पुंसः सदैवेति वदन्ति सन्तः ।। १-८५-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati explained, "Austerity, charity, tranquility, self-control, honesty, straightforwardness, and compassion towards all beings—these virtues dispel the darkness engulfing a person's soul, as asserted by the wise. Such qualities are ever-present and crucial for one's liberation."' ।। 1-85-22 ।।

english translation

[ya] tapaza ca dAnaM ca zamò damaza ca; harIra ArjavaM sarvabhUtAnukampA nazyanti mAnena tamò 'bhibhUtAH; puMsaH sadaiveti vadanti santaH || 1-85-22 ||

hk transliteration

अधीयानः पण्डितं मन्यमानॊ; यॊ विद्यया हन्ति यशः परेषाम तस्यान्तवन्तश च भवन्ति लॊका; न चास्य तद बरह्म फलं ददाति ।। १-८५-२३ ।।

sanskrit

'The individual who, having acquired knowledge, deems oneself learned, and uses that knowledge to undermine the reputation of others, never reaches the realms of everlasting bliss. Furthermore, such knowledge does not grant its possessor the capability to attain Brahman.' ।। 1-85-23 ।।

english translation

adhIyAnaH paNDitaM manyamAnò; yò vidyayA hanti yazaH pareSAma tasyAntavantaza ca bhavanti lòkA; na cAsya tada barahma phalaM dadAti || 1-85-23 ||

hk transliteration

चत्वारि कर्माण्य अभयंकराणि; भयं परयच्छन्त्य अयथा कृतानि मानाग्निहॊत्रम उत मानमौनं; मानेनाधीतम उत मानयज्ञः ।। १-८५-२४ ।।

sanskrit

'Study, silence, worship, and sacrificial offerings—these four alleviate all fear. But when tainted with vanity, they instill fear rather than dispel it.' ।। 1-85-24 ।।

english translation

catvAri karmANya abhayaMkarANi; bhayaM parayacchantya ayathA kRtAni mAnAgnihòtrama uta mAnamaunaM; mAnenAdhItama uta mAnayajJaH || 1-85-24 ||

hk transliteration

न मान्यमानॊ मुदम आददीत; न संतापं पराप्नुयाच चावमानात सन्तः सतः पूजयन्तीह लॊके; नासाधवः साधुबुद्धिं लभन्ते ।। १-८५-२५ ।।

sanskrit

'One should not derive joy from being honored nor should one endure sorrow due to dishonor. Wise individuals in this world worship the virtuous, not the wicked, as they do not attain a righteous mindset.' ।। 1-85-25 ।।

english translation

na mAnyamAnò mudama AdadIta; na saMtApaM parApnuyAca cAvamAnAta santaH sataH pUjayantIha lòke; nAsAdhavaH sAdhubuddhiM labhante || 1-85-25 ||
