अनित्यतां सुखदुःखस्य बुद्ध्वा; कस्मात संतापम अष्टकाहं भजेयम किं कुर्यां वै किं च कृत्वा न तप्ये; तस्मात संतापं वर्जयाम्य अप्रमत्तः ।। १-८४-११ ।।

sanskrit

'Understanding the transience of happiness and sorrow, why should I, O Ashtaka, indulge in grief? What should I do, or what should I not do, to avoid suffering? Therefore, I remain vigilant and avoid distress.' ।। 1-84-11 ।।

english translation

anityatAM sukhaduHkhasya buddhvA; kasmAta saMtApama aSTakAhaM bhajeyama kiM kuryAM vai kiM ca kRtvA na tapye; tasmAta saMtApaM varjayAmya apramattaH || 1-84-11 ||

hk transliteration

[आस्टक] ये ये लॊकाः पार्थिवेन्द्र परधानास; तवया भुक्ता यं च कालं यथा च तन मे राजन बरूहि सर्वं यथावत; कषेत्रज्ञवद भाषसे तवं हि धर्मान ।। १-८४-१२ ।।

'Endowed with all virtues, King Yayati, who was Ashtaka's maternal grandfather, having spoken from the sky, was once again queried by Ashtaka. Addressing the king of kings, Ashtaka said, "Please elaborate on all the realms you have visited and savored, along with the duration of your sojourn in each."' ।। 1-84-12 ।।

english translation

[AsTaka] ye ye lòkAH pArthivendra paradhAnAsa; tavayA bhuktA yaM ca kAlaM yathA ca tana me rAjana barUhi sarvaM yathAvata; kaSetrajJavada bhASase tavaM hi dharmAna || 1-84-12 ||

hk transliteration

[य] राजाहम आसम इह सार्वभौमस; ततॊ लॊकान महतॊ अजयं वै तत्रावसं वर्षसहस्रमात्रं; ततॊ लॊकं परम अस्म्य अभ्युपेतः ।। १-८४-१३ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati responded, "I reigned as a formidable king on Earth, with the entire world under my dominion. Through the virtue of my religious deeds, I earned access to many exalted realms. Residing in those realms for a complete millennium, I ultimately ascended to a supremely elevated domain—the residence of Indra."' ।। 1-84-13 ।।

english translation

[ya] rAjAhama Asama iha sArvabhaumasa; tatò lòkAna mahatò ajayaM vai tatrAvasaM varSasahasramAtraM; tatò lòkaM parama asmya abhyupetaH || 1-84-13 ||

ततः पुरीं पुरुहूतस्य रम्यां; सहस्रद्वारां शतयॊजनायताम अध्यावसं वर्षसहस्रमात्रं; ततॊ लॊकं परम अस्म्य अभ्युपेतः ।। १-८४-१४ ।।

sanskrit

'From there, I reached the beautiful city of Puruhuta (Indra), with its thousand doors and extending for a hundred yojanas. I dwelled there for only a thousand years; thereafter, I ascended to an even higher realm.' ।। 1-84-14 ।।

english translation

tataH purIM puruhUtasya ramyAM; sahasradvArAM zatayòjanAyatAma adhyAvasaM varSasahasramAtraM; tatò lòkaM parama asmya abhyupetaH || 1-84-14 ||

ततॊ दिव्यम अजरं पराप्य लॊकं; परजापतेर लॊकपतेर दुरापम तत्रावसं वर्षसहस्रमात्रं; ततॊ लॊकं परम अस्म्य अभ्युपेतः ।। १-८४-१५ ।।

sanskrit

'Then, having attained the divine and imperishable realm, which is unattainable even for the lord of all worlds, Prajapati, I dwelled there for a thousand years; after that, I ascended to an even higher realm (n viz., that of the god of gods (Vishnu)) where, too, I had lived in happiness.' ।। 1-84-15 ।।

tatò divyama ajaraM parApya lòkaM; parajApatera lòkapatera durApama tatrAvasaM varSasahasramAtraM; tatò lòkaM parama asmya abhyupetaH || 1-84-15 ||
