कथम अराजकं राष्ट्रं शक्यं धारयितुं परभॊ तस्माद गर्भं समाधत्स्व भीष्मस तं वर्धयिष्यति ।। १-९९-४१ ।।

sanskrit

'How is it possible to safeguard a realm without a monarch? Thus, ensure that conception occurs. Bhishma will safeguard the offspring during their prenatal phase.' ।। 1-99-41 ।।

english translation

kathama arAjakaM rASTraM zakyaM dhArayituM parabhò tasmAda garbhaM samAdhatsva bhISmasa taM vardhayiSyati || 1-99-41 ||

'Vyasa replied, 'If I am to give unto my brother's children so unseasonably, then let the ladies bear my ugliness. That in itself shall, in their case, be the austerest of penances.' ।। 1-99-42 ।।

'Vaisampayana continued, 'After speaking thus to Satyavati, Vyasa, endowed with immense power, instructed her, saying, "Let the princess of Kosala, adorned in fresh garments and fine jewelry, await me in her private quarters."' ।। 1-99-44 ।।

[va] samAgamanama AkAGkSanna iti sò 'natarhitò muniH tatò 'bhigamya sA devI sanuSAM rahasi saMgatAma dharmyama arthasamAyuktama uvAca vacanaM hitama || 1-99-44 ||

कौसल्ये धर्मतन्त्रं यद बरवीमि तवां निबॊध मे भरतानां समुच्छेदॊ वयक्तं मद्भाग्यसंक्षयात ।। १-९९-४५ ।।

'Having spoken these words, the sage disappeared. Satyavati then approached her daughter-in-law and, finding her alone, shared with her these meaningful and righteous words, 'O princess of Kosala, heed my words, for they align with virtue. Due to my misfortune, the lineage of the Bharatas is on the brink of extinction.'' ।। 1-99-45 ।।

kausalye dharmatantraM yada baravImi tavAM nibòdha me bharatAnAM samucchedò vayaktaM madbhAgyasaMkSayAta || 1-99-45 ||
