वयथितां मां च संप्रेक्ष्य पितृवंशं च पीडितम भीष्मॊ बुद्धिम अदान मे ऽतर धर्मस्य च विवृद्धये ॥ १-९९-४६ ॥

sanskrit

'Having observed me distressed and our paternal line in anguish, Bhishma, devoid of selfishness, imparted wisdom to me for the sake of upholding righteousness and for the enhancement of virtue.' ॥ 1-99-46 ॥

english translation

vayathitAM mAM ca saMprekSya pitRvaMzaM ca pIDitama bhISmò buddhima adAna me 'tara dharmasya ca vivRddhaye ॥ 1-99-46 ॥

'Seeing my distress and the end of our lineage, the wise Bhishma, also motivated by the wish to continue our lineage, has proposed a course of action. However, its realization depends on you.' ॥ 1-99-47 ॥

'O daughter, fulfill this task and revive the lineage of the Bharatas. O graceful one, give birth to a child as radiant as the leader of the gods. He will carry the weighty responsibility of our ancestral kingdom.' ॥ 1-99-48 ॥

'Satyavati having succeeded with great difficulty in procuring the assent of her virtuous daughter-in-law to her proposal which was not inconsistent with virtue, then fed Brahmanas and Rishis and numberless guests who arrived on dying occasion.' ॥ 1-99-49 ॥

sA dharmatò 'nunIyainAM kathaM cida dharmacAriNIma bhòjayAma Asa viprAMza ca devarSIna atithIMsa tathA ॥ 1-99-49 ॥
