ततस ते पन्नगा ये वै जरत्कारौ समाहिताः ताम आदाय परवृत्तिं ते वासुकेः परत्यवेदयन ॥ १-४२-१६ ॥
'After discerning Jaratkaru's intention, the serpents that had been sent to pursue him conveyed the information to Vasuki.' ॥ 1-42-16 ॥
english translation
tatasa te pannagA ye vai jaratkArau samAhitAH tAma AdAya paravRttiM te vAsukeH paratyavedayana ॥ 1-42-16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतेषां शरुत्वा स नागेन्द्रः कन्यां तां समलंकृताम परगृह्यारण्यम अगमत समीपं तस्य पन्नगः ॥ १-४२-१७ ॥
'Upon hearing their words, the serpent king took the adorned maiden with him and proceeded into the forest to reach the sage.' ॥ 1-42-17 ॥
english translation
teSAM zarutvA sa nAgendraH kanyAM tAM samalaMkRtAma paragRhyAraNyama agamata samIpaM tasya pannagaH ॥ 1-42-17 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत्र तां भैक्षवत कन्यां परादात तस्मै महात्मने नागेन्द्रॊ वासुकिर बरह्मन न स तां परत्यगृह्णत ॥ १-४२-१८ ॥
'And, O Brahmana, Vasuki, the king of the snakes, having gone there, offered that maiden as alms unto that high-souled Rishi. But the Rishi did not at once accept her.' ॥ 1-42-18 ॥
english translation
tatra tAM bhaikSavata kanyAM parAdAta tasmai mahAtmane nAgendrò vAsukira barahmana na sa tAM paratyagRhNata ॥ 1-42-18 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअसनामेति वै मत्वा भरणे चाविचारिते मॊक्षभावे सथितश चापि दवन्द्वी भूतः परिग्रहे ॥ १-४२-१९ ॥
'Thinking that she had been bestowed without proper consideration and due examination, and considering the renunciation leading to liberation, the sage, who remained firm in his resolve for liberation, became involved in a dual state regarding the acceptance of gifts.' ॥ 1-42-19 ॥

asanAmeti vai matvA bharaNe cAvicArite mòkSabhAve sathitaza cApi davandvI bhUtaH parigrahe ॥ 1-42-19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततॊ नाम स कन्यायाः पप्रच्छ भृगुनङ्गन वासुके भरणं चास्या न कुर्याम इत्य उवाच ह ॥ १-४२-२० ॥
'The sage, after pondering for a moment and noticing that the maiden did not share the same name as him and the issue of her maintenance remained unresolved, questioned Vasuki about the maiden's name. He also explicitly mentioned, "I will not undertake the responsibility of maintaining her."' ॥ 1-42-20 ॥

tatò nAma sa kanyAyAH papraccha bhRgunaGgana vAsuke bharaNaM cAsyA na kuryAma itya uvAca ha ॥ 1-42-20 ॥
