[मृग] न रिपून वै समुद्दिश्य विमुञ्चन्ति पुरा शरान रन्ध्र एषां विशेषेण वधकालः परशस्यते ॥ १-१०९-१६ ॥

sanskrit

'The deer then spoke, "O king, men do not release their arrows at their enemies when they are unprepared. But there is a designated time for it, namely after the declaration of hostilities. Therefore, killing at such a time is not to be condemned."' ॥ 1-109-16 ॥

[mRga] na ripUna vai samuddizya vimuJcanti purA zarAna randhra eSAM vizeSeNa vadhakAlaH parazasyate ॥ 1-109-16 ॥

'Pandu responded, "It is widely known that men hunt deer using various effective methods, regardless of whether the animals are vigilant or not. Therefore, O deer, why do you criticize me?"' ॥ 1-109-17 ॥

'The deer responded, "O king, I do not blame you for killing a deer or for injuring me. However, instead of acting so cruelly, you should have waited until the completion of my act of intercourse."' ॥ 1-109-18 ॥

सर्वभूतहिते काले सर्वभूतेप्सिते तथा कॊ हि विद्वान मृगं हन्याच चरन्तं मैथुनं वने पुरुषार्थ फलं कान्तं यत तवया वितथं कृतम ॥ १-१०९-१९ ॥

'What wise and virtuous person would kill a deer while it is engaged in such an act? The time of sexual intercourse is agreeable to every creature and beneficial to all. O king, I was fulfilling my sexual desire with my mate. But you have rendered that effort futile.' ॥ 1-109-19 ॥

sarvabhUtahite kAle sarvabhUtepsite tathA kò hi vidvAna mRgaM hanyAca carantaM maithunaM vane puruSArtha phalaM kAntaM yata tavayA vitathaM kRtama ॥ 1-109-19 ॥
