एवम उक्तः सपुत्रेण शंतनुः परत्यभाषत असंशयं धयानपरं यथा मात्थ तथास्म्य उत ।। १-९४-५६ ।।

'Thus addressed by his son, Santanu replied, "Without a doubt, I am deeply engrossed in thought, just as you have observed."' ।। 1-94-56 ।।

english translation

evama uktaH saputreNa zaMtanuH paratyabhASata asaMzayaM dhayAnaparaM yathA mAttha tathAsmya uta || 1-94-56 ||

अपत्यं नस तवम एवैकः कुले महति भारत अनित्यता च मर्त्यानाम अतः शॊचामि पुत्रक ।। १-९४-५७ ।।

sanskrit

'O scion of the Bharata lineage, you stand as the singular heir to our vast heritage. Engrossed in martial exploits and feats of valor, you carry our legacy forward. However, my son, my thoughts are constantly clouded by the fleeting nature of life.' ।। 1-94-57 ।।

english translation

apatyaM nasa tavama evaikaH kule mahati bhArata anityatA ca martyAnAma ataH zòcAmi putraka || 1-94-57 ||

कथं चित तव गाङ्गेय विपत्तौ नास्ति नः कुलम असंशयं तवम एवैकः शताद अपि वरः सुतः ।। १-९४-५८ ।।

sanskrit

'Should any misfortune befall you, O descendant of Ganga, our lineage would indeed be without an heir. Undoubtedly, you alone are the best among a hundred sons.' ।। 1-94-58 ।।

english translation

kathaM cita tava gAGgeya vipattau nAsti naH kulama asaMzayaM tavama evaikaH zatAda api varaH sutaH || 1-94-58 ||

न चाप्य अहं वृथा भूयॊ दारान कर्तुम इहॊत्सहे संतानस्याविनाशाय कामये भद्रम अस्तु ते अनपत्यतैक पुत्रत्वम इत्य आहुर धर्मवादिनः ।। १-९४-५९ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, I do not wish to marry again. My only desire and prayer are for your everlasting prosperity, ensuring the perpetuation of our dynasty. The wise say that having just one son is akin to having no son at all.' ।। 1-94-59 ।।

na cApya ahaM vRthA bhUyò dArAna kartuma ihòtsahe saMtAnasyAvinAzAya kAmaye bhadrama astu te anapatyataika putratvama itya Ahura dharmavAdinaH || 1-94-59 ||

अग्निहॊत्रं तरयॊ वेदा यज्ञाश च सहदक्षिणाः सर्वाण्य एतान्य अपत्यस्य कलां नार्हन्ति षॊडशीम ।। १-९४-६० ।।

'While sacrifices to the fire and mastery of the three Vedas certainly accrue eternal religious merit, none of these achieve even a sixteenth of the merit that is gained through the birth of a son, in terms of spiritual significance.' ।। 1-94-60 ।।

agnihòtraM tarayò vedA yajJAza ca sahadakSiNAH sarvANya etAnya apatyasya kalAM nArhanti SòDazIma || 1-94-60 ||
