[व] स एवं शंतनुर धीमान देवराजर्षिसत्कृतः धर्मात्मा सर्वलॊकेषु सत्यवाग इति विश्रुतः ।। १-९४-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said, 'The monarch Santanu, the most adored of the gods and royal sages, was known in all the worlds for his wisdom, virtues, and truthfulness (of speech).' ।। 1-94-1 ।।

english translation

[va] sa evaM zaMtanura dhImAna devarAjarSisatkRtaH dharmAtmA sarvalòkeSu satyavAga iti vizrutaH || 1-94-1 ||

hk transliteration

दमॊ दानं कषमा बुद्धिर हरीर धृतिस तेज उत्तमम नित्यान्य आसन महासत्त्वे शंतनौ पुरुषर्षभे ।। १-९४-२ ।।

sanskrit

'In Shantanu, a man of great essence and the best among men, virtues like self-control, generosity, forgiveness, intelligence, modesty, firmness, and supreme radiance were always present.' ।। 1-94-2 ।।

english translation

damò dAnaM kaSamA buddhira harIra dhRtisa teja uttamama nityAnya Asana mahAsattve zaMtanau puruSarSabhe || 1-94-2 ||

hk transliteration

एवं स गुणसंपन्नॊ धर्मार्थकुशलॊ नृपः आसीद भरत वंशस्य गॊप्ता साधु जनस्य च ।। १-९४-३ ।।

sanskrit

'Endowed with these noble attributes and proficient in matters of both righteousness and wealth, the monarch served as the guardian of the Bharata lineage and the welfare of all humanity. ' ।। 1-94-3 ।।

english translation

evaM sa guNasaMpannò dharmArthakuzalò nRpaH AsIda bharata vaMzasya gòptA sAdhu janasya ca || 1-94-3 ||

hk transliteration

कम्बुग्रीवः पृथु वयंसॊ मत्तवारणविक्रमः धर्म एव परः कामाद अर्थाच चेति वयवस्थितः ।। १-९४-४ ।।

sanskrit

'With his neck adorned with three lines reminiscent of a conch shell, broad shoulders, and a prowess akin to that of an enraged elephant, it appeared as though all the auspicious signs of royalty had found their perfect abode within him.' ।। 1-94-4 ।।

english translation

kambugrIvaH pRthu vayaMsò mattavAraNavikramaH dharma eva paraH kAmAda arthAca ceti vayavasthitaH || 1-94-4 ||

hk transliteration

एतान्य आसन महासत्त्वे शंतनौ भरतर्षभ न चास्य सदृशः कश चित कषत्रियॊ धर्मतॊ ऽभवत ।। १-९४-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Men, seeing the behavior of that monarch of great achievements came to know that virtue was ever superior to pleasure and profit. These were the attributes that dwelt in that great being--that bull among men--Santanu.' ।। 1-94-5 ।।

english translation

etAnya Asana mahAsattve zaMtanau bharatarSabha na cAsya sadRzaH kaza cita kaSatriyò dharmatò 'bhavata || 1-94-5 ||
