[दाष] अस्यां जायेत यः पुत्रः स राजा पृथिवीपतिः तवद ऊर्ध्वम अभिषेक्तव्यॊ नान्यः कश चन पार्थिव ।। १-९४-५१ ।।

sanskrit

'The fisherman declared, "O monarch, my request is straightforward: the son that will be born from this maiden must be the one to succeed you to the throne, with no other to be appointed as your heir."' ।। 1-94-51 ।।

english translation

[dASa] asyAM jAyeta yaH putraH sa rAjA pRthivIpatiH tavada Urdhvama abhiSektavyò nAnyaH kaza cana pArthiva || 1-94-51 ||

[व] नाकामयत तं दातुं वरं दाशाय शंतनुः शरीरजेन तीव्रेण दह्यमानॊ ऽपि भारत ।। १-९४-५२ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, 'O Bharata, upon hearing this, Santanu felt no inclination to grant such a boon, even though the fire of desire burned fiercely within him.' ।। 1-94-52 ।।

[va] nAkAmayata taM dAtuM varaM dAzAya zaMtanuH zarIrajena tIvreNa dahyamAnò 'pi bhArata || 1-94-52 ||

स चिन्तयन्न एव तदा दाशकन्यां महीपतिः परत्ययाद धास्तिन पुरं शॊकॊपहतचेतनः ।। १-९४-५३ ।।

'The king with his heart afflicted by desire returned to Hastinapura, thinking of the fisherman's daughter. And having returned home, the monarch passed his time in sorrowful meditation.' ।। 1-94-53 ।।

sa cintayanna eva tadA dAzakanyAM mahIpatiH paratyayAda dhAstina puraM zòkòpahatacetanaH || 1-94-53 ||

'Then, at some point, seeing his father Santanu immersed in sorrow and deep contemplation, the son, Devavrata, approached and spoke to him.' ।। 1-94-54 ।।

सर्वतॊ भवतः कषेमं विधेयाः सर्वपार्थिवाः तत किमर्थम इहाभीक्ष्णं परिशॊचसि दुःखितः धयायन्न इव च किं राजन नाभिभाषसि किं चन ।। १-९४-५५ ।।

'"Why, O king, are you constantly worrying, distressed as you are? All the monarchs of the earth are subservient to you in all respects. Why then do you grieve like this and remain silent without expressing anything?"' ।। 1-94-55 ।।

sarvatò bhavataH kaSemaM vidheyAH sarvapArthivAH tata kimarthama ihAbhIkSNaM parizòcasi duHkhitaH dhayAyanna iva ca kiM rAjana nAbhibhASasi kiM cana || 1-94-55 ||
