स कदा चिन मृगं विद्ध्वा गङ्गाम अनुसरन नदीम भागीरथीम अल्पजलां शंतनुर दृष्टवान नृपः ॥ १-९४-२१ ॥

'Once, while hunting, he shot a deer and followed it along the riverbank until he reached the shallow waters of the Ganga. There, King Shantanu saw the Bhagirathi, the river with scanty waters.' ॥ 1-94-21 ॥

sa kadA cina mRgaM viddhvA gaGgAma anusarana nadIma bhAgIrathIma alpajalAM zaMtanura dRSTavAna nRpaH ॥ 1-94-21 ॥

तां दृष्ट्वा चिन्तयाम आस शंतनुः पुरुषर्षभः सयन्दते किं नव इयं नाद्य सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा यथा पुरा ॥ १-९४-२२ ॥

'Seeing her, the best of men, Shantanu, began to ponder: "Why is this noble river reduced to such a state as not to flow, unlike in the past?"' ॥ 1-94-22 ॥

tAM dRSTvA cintayAma Asa zaMtanuH puruSarSabhaH sayandate kiM nava iyaM nAdya saricchreSThA yathA purA ॥ 1-94-22 ॥

ततॊ निमित्तम अन्विच्छन ददर्श स महामनाः कुमारं रूपसंपन्नं बृहन्तं चारुदर्शनम ॥ १-९४-२३ ॥

'And the king, beholding this extraordinary feat of the river Ganga having been checked in her course near where that youth stood, became very much surprised.' ॥ 1-94-23 ॥

tatò nimittama anvicchana dadarza sa mahAmanAH kumAraM rUpasaMpannaM bRhantaM cArudarzanama ॥ 1-94-23 ॥

दिव्यम अस्त्रं विकुर्वाणं यथा देवं पुरंदरम कृत्स्नां गङ्गां समावृत्य शरैस तीक्ष्णैर अवस्थितम ॥ १-९४-२४ ॥

'Crafting a divine weapon like Lord Indra, he stood on the bank of the Ganga, encircling the entire river with his sharp arrows.' ॥ 1-94-24 ॥

divyama astraM vikurvANaM yathA devaM puraMdarama kRtsnAM gaGgAM samAvRtya zaraisa tIkSNaira avasthitama ॥ 1-94-24 ॥

'Seeing the river Ganga encompassed by arrows at its end, the king was astonished, witnessing an extraordinary deed.' ॥ 1-94-25 ॥
