एवं हि मे कथयति शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी वचनं तीक्ष्णपरुषं करॊधरक्तेक्षणा भृशम ॥ १-७३-३१ ॥

'In such a manner has Sarmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan, addressed me, her eyes inflamed, her words sharp and cruel.' ॥ 1-73-31 ॥

english translation

evaM hi me kathayati zarmiSThA vArSaparvaNI vacanaM tIkSNaparuSaM karòdharaktekSaNA bhRzama ॥ 1-73-31 ॥

सतुवतॊ दुहिता हि तवं याचतः परतिगृह्णतः सुताहं सतूयमानस्य ददतॊ ऽपरतिगृह्णतः ॥ १-७३-३२ ॥

'You are the daughter of one who sings praises for others for a fee, who seeks and accepts charity. In contrast, I am the daughter of one who is revered, who bestows gifts upon others, and who never accepts anything in return.' ॥ 1-73-32 ॥

satuvatò duhitA hi tavaM yAcataH paratigRhNataH sutAhaM satUyamAnasya dadatò 'paratigRhNataH ॥ 1-73-32 ॥

इति माम आह शर्मिष्ठा दुहिता वृषपर्वणः करॊधसंरक्तनयना दर्पपूर्णा पुनः पुनः ॥ १-७३-३३ ॥

'Sarmishtha, the proud daughter of Vrishaparvan, repeatedly spoke these words to me, her eyes reddened with anger.' ॥ 1-73-33 ॥

iti mAma Aha zarmiSThA duhitA vRSaparvaNaH karòdhasaMraktanayanA darpapUrNA punaH punaH ॥ 1-73-33 ॥

यद्य अहं सतुवतस तात दुहिता परतिगृह्णतः परसादयिष्ये शर्मिष्ठाम इत्य उक्ता हि सखी मया ॥ १-७३-३४ ॥

'Father, if indeed I am the daughter of one who sings praises for hire, of one who accepts gifts, then I must seek her favor by offering my respects. I have already conveyed this to her!' ॥ 1-73-34 ॥

yadya ahaM satuvatasa tAta duhitA paratigRhNataH parasAdayiSye zarmiSThAma itya uktA hi sakhI mayA ॥ 1-73-34 ॥

[षुक्र] सतुवतॊ दुहिता न तवं भद्रे न परतिगृह्णतः अस्तॊतुः सतुयमानस्य दुहिता देव यान्य असि ॥ १-७३-३५ ॥

'Sukra replied, 'O Devayani, you are not the daughter of a hired chanter, nor of one who seeks alms or accepts gifts. You are the daughter of one who adores none but is adored by all!' ॥ 1-73-35 ॥

[Sukra] satuvatò duhitA na tavaM bhadre na paratigRhNataH astòtuH satuyamAnasya duhitA deva yAnya asi ॥ 1-73-35 ॥
